Mmmm mymate Marmite.

http://www.accomodata.co.uk/marmite.htm

I love all the pickles mentioned plus, pickled: red cabbage, caulifour, silverskinned onions, ghurkins, eggs and Piccalilli Mmmmmmmmmmmmm lovely with a nice sharp cheddar cheese. ;)

The term piccalilli first entered English in the middle of the 18th century. Its origin is unknown and may simply be a play upon "pickle." Piccalilli is bright yellow thanks to turmeric and mustard, with identifiable pieces of vegetable. Its flavour is sweet-acid and spicy.

INGREDIENTS: Prepared vegetables - 2.75 kg (6 lb) marrow, cucumber, beans, small onions, cauliflower, Salt - 500 g (1lb 2 oz), Water - 4.5 litres (8 pints), Sugar - 250 g (9 oz), Mustard powder - 1 tbsp, Ground ginger - 1* tsp, White vinegar - 1.7 litres (3 pints), Plain flour - 4 tbsp, Turmeric - 2 tbsp.

COOKING: 1. Dice the marrow and cucumber, slice the beans, halve the onions and break the cauliflower into small florets.
2. Dissolve salt in the water and add the vegetables. Cover and leave for 24 hours.
3. Remove the vegetables, rinse and drain.
4. Blend the sugar, mustard and ginger with 1.5 litres (2* pints) of the vinegar in a large pan, add the vegetables, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes.
5. Blend the flour and turmeric with the remaining vinegar and stir into the cooked vegetables.
6. Bring to the boil and cook for 1-2 minutes. Pot and cover.

Piq, you are well on the way to passing our Immigrants' Test. If you can eat Marmite, you'll be able to eat Vegemite.

Asians of all descriptions can't stand it, though the more adventurous get a taste for it if they stay here long enough. A German who I saw offered it in a hotel swore he'd been poisoned!

I've had Vegemite. Several brands. Weak stuff compared to Marmite :)

I think the only part of the NZ immigration test I might fail is an appetite for mutton. I only like it if its stewed in indian food. I'm not wild about lamb either.

Liverwurst and bacon sandwich .... yummmmmmmmm.
Cheese, all sorts... yummmmmmmmmmmmmm.

In Quebec City, we were served marinated, sliced river snails. Rubbery and not too flavorful. The pike was tasty tho. And the mussels smelt divine, tho he who ordered them was not sharing! :D

A friend e-mailed this to me, and it seemed so incredible I "snopesed" it, and it's for real.

Oh, wow. I gotta go to the Grand Canyon! Oh, my, oh wow :grinning:

That is so cool!

Bravery not involved. Gil and Deb wouldn't go anywhere near the Rim. Ant and I couldn't get out far enough. Neither point of view even slightly understands the other. Total incomprehension.

I'm sure the Grand Canyon Skywalk is far less dangerous than a Big Apple Sidewalk.
I expect someone has done their sums and decided that projected incomes from visitors justify the undoubtedly high cost of this interesting project.

I'll let someone else try this. I've been wary of glass ever since TVNZ's glass balustrades started shattering unexpectedly. It cost an arm & 2 legs to take out the lot and reinstall them, covered with with plastic safety film, and with aluminium bracing. No problem since, but I'm still wary.

Nice idea though.

Re visiting NZ.

2 Americans died here the other day because they forgot where they were and drove on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic, presumably around a bend. LHD people often get into trouble this way, though not usually as spectacularly as these people did.

We drive on the LEFT!

Piq, I think you'll be hard pressed to find any mutton these days. Plenty of lamb though, and sometimes the lambs are pretty big, but the days of tough old ewe mutton have gone.

Yeh, I can imagine how that happened. I learnt to drive on the left (and I still think that makes better drivers) although I encountered "wrong side" driving the first time at the age of 15 riding a bike in Holland. And have been "keeping right" for the last 30-odd years.
About 20 years ago on a visit to London I drove out of my mum's condominium courtyard one morning, turned right on to the main road, and took 10 seconds to recall that I should have been driving on the left...

Ooohhhh! That would be so cool! And hang gliding and base jumping would be another E-ticket rush!

The rest of the site looks like a primo vacation plan. The Walk, there are helicopter rides, jeep tours, hummer tours, horse tours, a hike, and a pontoon boat ride. The fees for any or all of these seem very modest.

Anyone who hasn't been to the Canyon is missing something. It's awe-inspiring.

Anyone been in the CN tower in Toronto? I was there a few years ago and watch the reaction of people when they noticed the glass floor on part of the observation deck.

The MRHYN wouldn't go anywhere near it, just getting her up there was a major effort, but the real hoot was little kids.

They'd stand on the floor and look down at the basball field and all the other doll house looking building and then start jumping up and down on the glass, their mothers would snatch them up as if afraid the kids were going to break the glass, I cried I was laughing so hard.

N.Y. Man Gets Corvette Back After 37 Years

36 years later, a stolen car finds its way back

Okay, was it 36 or 37 years?

And this, from the second article:

"He said, 'You had a car stolen in '69? A Corvette? What color was it?'" Poster recalled. "I said, 'Blue.' He said, "We have your car.'"

The photos in the first article show officials unveiling a silver vette with a red interior.

Sheesh.

The article says it is now silver, apparently they scraped the paint or lifted the hood to find the original colour. It's apparently in good condition, but the engine has been replaced and it has no transmission.

At this point, there's no record that it has been licensed or registered in the 37 years since it was stolen. They're trying to trace the history of it now, but I reckon the statute of limitations has run out on the original theft. Receiving stolen property is still a valid charge if it's changed hands in the past few years, but I suppose they'll be content to let the buyer suffer the loss of his purchase price, it'll be up to him to try to recoup his losses, and maybe the original thief will be traced down that way.

On the bright side, did you notice that the auto-theft rate in New York is reportedly a fourth of what it was back then.

Grand Canyon:
I'd not enjoy being on that catwalk. I keep thinking of that overlook platform in NZ that collapsed under the weight of an unusual number of Japanese students. Altoid will love it. I will wait in terror til she returns. If its not completely enclosed, I will accompany her in terror and try not to transmit it to her.

Saw an Indian grandmother hiking a ridge trail on a windy day, wearing jeweled flipflops. She and I have different comfort levels for traction in high places!

I wonder if the corvette guy has to reimburse his insurance company now? :D
