I read this short piece on Sarah Chang and remembered how in high school, I struggled through almost getting the notes right just to get passing grades, never getting anywhere near the point of interpreting the music I was attempting to learn.
The middle section labeled "QUOTE" hit me hardest.
Thoughts from the peanut gallery about how different minds can embrace things at such extraordinarily different levels?

A pertinent thought from this peanut:

Every performance should indeed be based on the spontaneous interpretation of the moment to truly have passion, IMNSHO, and it will become a unique event because of that spontanaeity. I think she's romanticizing just a wee bit about not paying a lot of intellectual attention to the music, however. What really frees the performer to interpret wholly is intimate knowledge of the music; being able to forget about the esoteric bits and just focus on the emotion.

Having said all that, I really mean it to apply in the context of "classical" music. A jazz improvisationist, for instance, can get away with knowing basically just the chord progression and the basic melody, and the rest is the music building in his head.

As for pop, well, let's just not go there..............
