Copy or Coincidence?

Postby shostakovich » Thu Mar 09, 2006 7:07 pm

I've been putting many records onto tape or CD for easier playing and transporting. I went to a 3-record set of Saint-Saens' music for violin and orchestra. In addition to the 3 concertos there are 8 other works, 2 of which are popular. I was whistling one, and got it confused with something else. I finally figured out what.

Sugar in the morning,
Sugar in the evening,
Sugar at suppertime -----

If you know the song, play the first minute of Havanaise. Replace the 2 "in"s by pauses.
Copy, or coincidence?

I'd bet it was "copy", just like Elvis' It's Now or Never and O sole mio.

It's travesty, pure and simple....

There are loads of more examples of this - none occurs to me at the moment as I am listening to Prokofiev's Symphony no. 2 on BBC Radio 3 (Internet streaming), but I will get back with some!

Did Eric Carmen ever write anything except lyrics to Rachmaninov melodies?

Lots of other classical melodies were used in pop songs like Stranger in Paradise by Tony Bennet, Are You Lonesome Tonight by Elvis Presley, and Don't You Know by Della Reese.

At least A Lover's Concerto by the Toys gave about a 25% credit to its classical roots, even though Bach's Minuet in G isn't a concerto.

Shos, My guess is OT or Bones would know. Most of the arias with first lines more complicated than Nessun Dorma bufuddle me. I just know they are arias. In the opening credits of the movie Moonstruck, as I recall, they play the aria that Don't You Know was taken from, if that helps.

I do know that Annette Funicello's Dream Boy is a copy of Funiculi Funicula. Others will come to mind (or not) over the next few weeks.

Better ask Bones.

I didn't know Are You Lonesome Tonight? was taken from an aria, and I'm not familiar with the other one by the title.

I seem to remember Tchaikovsky's piano concerto set to words as "Alone at Last" by Jackie Wilson, very early sixties.

A Grieg piano concerto was also souped up for the rock&roll radio stations, the name has been on the tip of my tongue for days now.

You know, they just don't make nostalgia like they used to.....

2. Mozart's piano concerto no 25 - 1st movement: French national anthem
3. Dvořák's "Rusalka" - "O Silver Moon": "Somewhere over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz"

The second movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 reminds me of Celine Dion "all by myself"

Hi David. Not bad. The similarity would never have occurred to me.

O Silver Moon doesn't strike me as close enough to Over the Rainbow. Maybe it will then I listen to the aria again.

Oh and a really famous one -
Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Rhaphsody: "Put another Nickel In"

You got a hit on this one. It's not so clear to me till after "All I want is loving you, and music, music, music."

-----------------------------------------------------
Hi Violinist. I don't hear, yet, "all by myself" in the concerto, but an earlier song, "Full Moon and Empty Arms" came from it.

Thanks for contributing, folks.

Don't know about Celine's version, but Eric Carmen did a song by the same name that's a clear copy, as well as Never Gonna Fall in Love Again, which I believe is from Rocky's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini."

There was also a song called There's No Tomorrow with the tune from "O Sole Mio."

Hi Barfle. I can't quite place "Never Gonna" with the Rhapsody, but the other one is a direct copy, without question.

Then there's "The Story of 3 Loves"- 18th variation from Rachmanninoff's "Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini".

"Full Moon and Empty Arms" comes from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2 as does "All By Myself". But "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" is from Symphony #2 of Rachmaninoff's. At least Barry Manilow acknowledged Chopin as the musical composer of his song, Could it be Magic. Don't think Eric Carmen acknowledges anyone.
