One More 'Recommendation' Post...

Postby navneeth » Mon Mar 13, 2006 9:34 am

...this time it's from a newbie. Let me introduce myself. I'm Navneeth from Chennai(formerly Madras), India. I enjoyed listening to western classical music whenever I happened to come across it, but that was it. About a month ago I found this site, and have been listening to some great music ever since. As such, I'm a novice and can't really differentiate between Brahms and Beethoven, or Bach and Mozart, but one thing's for sure, I've a liking for violin concertos, especially those by Mozart and Bach. Amazon.com lists quite a few CDs and I would like to purchase may be a couple of them. I would be glad if any of you could recommend some titles. It will be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Navneeeth

Hello Navneeth! Welcome to the Pit! :)

I'm not a good one to recommend violin concertos, but there are several here who are - just wanted to be the first to welcome you.

OT,

RE:just wanted to be the first to welcome you.

Too late: :D

What are you doing up so early, anyway? We don't usually hear from you till Film at Eleven or later? (Which, I suppose, is Film at Eight in your neck of the woods).

Hmm, I guess I was.... :o

I got up ~1 hour earlier than usual, have some free time since Altoid has woken up yet, so I'm spending my time gainfully posting on the BBB.

Hi, my name is Jim and I'm a BBB addict.....

One other thing, Navneeth, one of our regulars, PSIP, started a Beethoven.com map, where we can go and post our location on the globe, to see where people are listening from. You may find it interesting and fun.

When it comes to buying CDs of classical music I haven't heard before, I usually opt for the cheapest ones, because most of the artists are competent and they will do well enough to let me know if I like the piece or not.

Navneeth,

On another thread I recommended the EMI Classics budget box sets. They have sets of Violin concertos.

For solo violin, I would recommend at least one collection of works by Fritz Kreisler. Joshua Bell has an album of his works.

BTW, if there's something you want to hear, request it on Beethoven.com. If they have it, they'll play it. You're the best judge of what you'll like and don't like. :)

Thanks for the ideas and recommendations, guys.

Shapely,
I actually did request Venus by Holst a week ago or so. I haven't heard it before, and I'm also an astronomy buff. :)

The entire "Planets" suite is remarkable. It's probably one of my favorite orchestral works. I have at least half a dozen copies. The Bernstein and NYPO recording with the god Mercury on the cover is certainly one of my top five recordings, and I have a LARGE collection of recordings.

Ooh, I didn't know about the Beethoven map either. I'll go mark my spot!

Beethoven is #1! (Both composer and station).

Hello Navneeth. This is Shos, and I approve the message of DavidS. I first thought of Vivaldi's Seasons when I read your message.

It's also good to have you on board for other, personal, reasons. On the Culture Connections Board I'll sometime be posting thoughts about religions in general. I will include Hinduism and Buddhism, of which I know only the shallows. If you see something that needs commentary or correction, jump in (especially if it's only commentary :D ).

Hello, Shos.Vivaldi has also been on my list of things to buy ever since they played it recently ( a couple of weeks ago maybe) on Beethoven.com . After hearing some more music, I think I'll relax the condition that it should be a violin concerto ONLY for Mozart. Any composition by that man played with any instrument is amazing! Maybe I'm just stating the obvious here, but, as I said, I'm just a newbie. :D

Right now, Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor is playing. This particular version is by the Hanover Band. It's pretty good.

I would've been in dreamland at that hour. :D But before I went to bed, I heard a nice Schubert composition (don't remember the name, though).
