What's My Name?

Postby shostakovich » Mon Apr 17, 2006 8:21 pm

I am a travelogue in 3 short movements, with a Mediterranean atmosphere. My creator wrote me in Italy after having won the coveted Prix de Rome. Although I was written early in my creator's career, I have been, and still am, his most popular work. One sibling of mine seems to have attained its own popularity, but I fail to understand why. It may be all right to listen to as a diversion, but it is not nearly as beautiful as I am. What's my name?

What is "L'enfant prodigue", by Claude DeBussy?

Although not Italian, did the composer spend most of the last two decades of his life in Rome?

Rayzor,

Your guesses to these puzzles should not directly disclose the answer. That spoils the solving of the puzzle for everyone else.

Make your guesses in the form of small hints that have enough information to show Shos you think you know the answer and which add another piece to the puzzle. As in my guess above, if I'm right, Shos will say so and that's another piece of the puzzle for everyone else.

By the way, I suspect your guess is wrong, since most people wouldn't think that "L'enfant prodigue" is DeBussy's most popular work.

You can also pm Show the actual answer, but he doenst check his pm's often,
so Bones' clever method is the best.

Happy hunting.

Well, I now know more about several composers than I did before, but I'm bummed that I can't figure out the answer.

I thought if I meditated about it, I might get it, but that didn't seem to help.

I think being away for so long has made my brain lamer than it used to be.

This is a good one, Shos. I'm glad you're still doing them. Is anything in my response even close the the answer?

OH. :(

Really sorry about that. I was not aware of how this game was played.

I believe I'm wrong with the answer anyhow, because I think I found the right answer inadvertently last night while reading a novel.

If I was right, sorry for ruining the game folks. :(

Not a problem, Ray. From my research I think you gave the wrong answer too :p .

Try again with your new guess. Suggest a clue that would fit the answer. Shos will probably be able to tell if you are right or not.

I have absolutely no idea of what the correct answer is, but I'm sure that I will be learning a lot of stuff from this series. Just now I did a search for older editions of this game and found that it is making a comeback after a hiatus of more than three years! I hope What's My Name? will be posted more often in the future.

Keep up the great job, Shos!

Is the work one of three, and is there a waterwork involved?

Shos, I bet saxophone players know this fellow's works as well as they know their scales.

Hi Rayzor. L'enfant Prodigue is not a travelogue in 3 short movements.

From Selma: "Is the work one of three, and is there a waterwork involved?"
Hi Selma. The work is in 3 movements, but not one of 3 anythings I can think of. It all has to do with the Mediterranean.

From Bones: "Although not Italian, did the composer spend most of the last two decades of his life in Rome?"

Yup!

From GC: "Shos, I bet saxophone players know this fellow's works as well as they know their scales."

You are probably right. I'm unfamiliar with his saxophone work(s), but a certain one pops up in his bios. Oops. As I read your comment again, I think one of your words may be a very big hint.

I actually did check my PMs, and am happy to report that Bones and GC have identified the composition in question. That's a promising start.

I guess the clue in my reply to GC was too vague. I'm sending you a PM, Shos.

An earlier winner of the prix de Rome wrote a piece with a similar name construction for piano. it also has 3 movements and is inspired by different places in the world. namely Spain, Java and a general landscape (probably Paris). try guessing this one too.
