Beethoven's 9th reminds me of Romeo &Juliet:

Postby rmauney » Mon Mar 05, 2001 4:16 pm
Even since I heard Mr. B's 9th , I always think of Mr. S's Romeo & Juliet.
1st movement: Romeo sees Juliet at the party and tried to meet her. Later the movement is the backdrop for the balcony scene.
2nd: Romeo fights with Juliet's cousin and kills him and runs.

3rd: Romeo & Juliet love scene while hiding with the help of Juliet's nurse. Later the death scene.
4th: both families renounce the fued and pronouce peace.

Interesting, rmauney. I don`t quite see it that way myself (the symphony is too grand to be mere commentary), but the important thing is that this great music has image association for you. And you`re not very far off the mark with those images.
If you`re unaware of Beethoven`s string quartet in F, opus 18, no.1, you may be interested in knowing that, while composing its wonderful slow movement, he was thinking of the burial vault scene in this play.
