You're on a desert island and for music you must choose only 10 symphonies--all by different composers. Which symphonies would surive your cut? Here's mine:
1. Beethoven Symphony No. 3
2. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4
3. Brahms Symphony No. 2
4. Berlioz Symphony Fantastique
5. Schubert Symphony No. 8
6. Sibelius Symphony No. 5
7. Khachaturian Symphony No. 2
8. Dvorak Symphony No. 8
9. Schumann Symphony No. 3
10. Mozart Symphony No. 41
1. Beethoven's 6th
2. Haydn's 104th (London)
3. Brahms' 4th
4. Mozart's 40th
5. Mahler's 4th
6. Sibelius' 2nd
7. Schubert's 5th
8. Prokofiev's 1st (Classical)
9. Schumann's 1st (Spring)
10. Bruckner's 4th
The fact that I can only pick one work by any composer has distorted my list. (My ideal list would be: All nine of Beethoven's symphonies plus my No. 2 choice from above)
M.

Sorry, but 10 different composers just can`t be done. Beethoven`s 9 are the A to Z of this genre, so I insist on having these, plus Mozart`s Jupiter, as my 10.

The reason I suggested naming 10 symphonies by 10 DIFFERENT composers was to make people think of the many, many OTHER great composers out there (besides the usual suspects) and the vast number and variety of symphonies over three centuries. If I had to name my FAVORITE symphonies, it would have been dominated by the obvious ones..leaving out many other great composers and symphonies.
I even had to leave composers off my list of 10. What about Saint Saen's Organ Symphony...Cesar Franks' Symphony in D...Mendlessohn, Shoshtakovich, Mahler, Bruckner...and on and on.
