Capture to MP3

Postby treebeau » Mon Mar 19, 2001 10:24 am

Greetings,
I have an acquaintance whose last name is Watkins. She does not have
the opportunity to listen to Beethoven.com during the day. I would like
to capture the song "Watkin's Ale" from the CLBN stream as an MP3 file
so that she can hear it. Can this be done ? Has anyone here figured out how to do it ?
Thanks and regards,
Tim B.

I usually capture as a .wav file with Creative Wave Studio. I have a Creative Soundblaster PCI 128 sound card, and the Wave Studio comes with the driver. Most cards come with some kind of audio recorder. The nicer ones come with a wave editor. The latter is nice because you can cut out anouncements or those pesky Windows dings. One thing you have to do is make sure that the stereo mix channel is enabled in your sound card software. Otherwise, you'll get a recording of nothing. The volume at which you record can also be important. Then there's the issue of saving. A 128 bit sound card makes 10 minutes of audio into about 100MB. So put the squeeze on it with compression when you save it. Remember CD quality sound is only 16 bit stereo. So for the best quality set the Hz as high as possible, put it on 16 bit stereo and save it. Then you might want to WinZip it for portability. Oh, I don't know of a way to get a .wav file to be an MP-3, but Windows Media Player and RealPlayer both play .wav files. So, does that help? I hope so.
-- EJA

Hi John-
It's not that dangerous now. (MP3's that is) The Recording Industry and the government have seen to that. Check out http://napster.com For the latest in news reports about the court case dealing with the licensing of MP3's and file sharing.
There is a huge gap between those who agree and disagree with the US Courts verdict. Check it out for yourself! Crazy times we live in!

MusicMatch Jukebox has a file conversion feature between WAV and MP3 file formats. You can download it from www.musicmatch.com/home/
Jeff

If I understand the law correctly, it is also legal to give such a copy to a friend, as long as you don't benefit financially. I've got an almost complete recording of Stairway to Heaven by the LSO on my hard drive. I really like that piece. . .
Now, napster and friends have taken this law and run with it. What they did, in my opinion, is morally wrong, though it may be legally correct. Obviously the laws need work. Or maybe the people?
-- EJA
