One thing I have learned in all this is that it is extremely difficult to find any information on Gavril Popov.
If I may be so bold, TK almost has to be Tichon Khrennikov, given the clever anagram provided by Peter.
I think John may very well be right. The French Novel would then be "Colas Breugnon" by Romain Rolland (Opus 90), and the English play is indeed "Romeo and Juliet," though he calls it "Romeo and Julia" (Opus 56). He also wrote Ten Shakespeare Sonnets for voice and piano (Opus 52). Perhaps that is the ten-part piece of which you spoke? Add to that his first name in common with Shos and his last name starting with the same letter as our friend "No Itch," and I think we have a pretty good case.
Shos, we nervously await your verdict. . .
-- EJA
[This message has been edited by EJA (edited 03-31-2001).]

Hi all,
I agree with John & Ethan that Kabalevsky is our man; the preferred 3 pieces on one CD being, presumably, Romeo & Juliet, Colas Breugnon & The Comedians.
Sparky, the grapes reference was because Shos has been unwell. Bacchus? Very clever, but obviously I mislead you! Sorry!
Shos, I can't remember why I made the alcohol point(!), but is it not correct that Shostakovich helped the young Popov? Thanks for another good quiz. Your effort in assembling them is not unappreciated, & my interest in Russian composers has been definitely on the increase since I started posting on this forum. Thanks again!
