Help, Help

Postby shostakovich » Mon Apr 09, 2001 5:49 pm

I'd like to find out the address, e-mail or regular, for Peter Schickele. I used keyword "schickele" and found a host of sites ABOUT him, but didn't see any way to mail him. I've seen some incredible web discoveries on the boards. Can any of you wonderful detectives help me out? Thanks.
Shos

Hi Ethan. Better than it has been. I can manage about an hour at a keyboard, so I'm checking in each day, even if I don't post. It seems a couple of vertebrae are not where they ought to be. More dr. appts. to come. Since there's nothing especially musical about this post, let me pose a challenge (to me, too). Can you all come up with musical titles that connect music and medicine?
Shos

Well, I've been working on my own challenge, and pretty much hit a blank wall. All I can think of is Rossini's (?) Castor Oil Polka. Someone else came up with The Sleeping Draught by someone named Weyse. Maybe that was a nice way of saying "Put this challenge to sleep".
Shos

Well, Shos, I can kind of sympahtize. I have recently been diagnosed with congenital degenerative hip dysplasia. They're considering a pelvic osteotomy in the near future, and I've been told to expect to be on artificial hips within the next ten years. When I mention that I am scheduled to get my wisdom teeth rooted out near the end of the month, you will realize what a rare condition this is for someone my age. It's having the opposite effect on me, though; I'm spending more and more time seated, often in front of a keyboard, which is hard for someone as active as me. Turns out you can't eat nearly as much . . . Well, I hope they get to the bottom of your problem soon so that you can get going again.
As for your challenge, I have no ideas.

-- EJA

Two short canons by Beethoven come to mind:
WoO 189 which has the words "The doctor bars the gate to Death, music also helps relieve our distress"
and WoO 190, a puzzle canon, which simply reads "I was here, Doctor, I was here."
There is also the so-called "Rural Cantata" which was written for the name-day of one of Beethoven's doctors, Giovanni Malfatti (with an eye on the daughter, no doubt).

Michael

Shos and Ethan,
Please don't take my facetious messages as showing a lack of sympathy. I hope your trapped nerve gets sorted soon, Shos. I had something similar a year or two ago, and it was not too pleasant.
Ethan, you sound like a person with a very positive attitude and that should help you in no small way. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that doesn't sound too facile.
I have been "ill" for the past two years with a mysterious viral complaint, sometimes described as M.E. or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
which has caused me to take early retirement.
It could be much worse, and I am grateful that my hobbies always were reading and listening to music - and not mountaineering.
I can't imagine how it must be for an active person.
I'll just repeat Beethoven's words as used in his short canon:
"The doctor bars the gate to death, Music also helps relieve our distress"
Michael

As long as we're swapping health gripes, I'm a video engineer who keeps needing stronger and stronger glasses. I keep reminding myself that Beethoven was deaf, so I should quit complaining!
