Audiogirl,
Rite of Spring is gobbledy-gook?
To quote Dr. Evil:
"You just don't get it, do you...you just don't."
Seriously, I'll bet you'd like the work if you listened to it a few more times. You might still think it is gobbledygook, but maybe you'll start to think it is GOOD gobbledygook. But don't listen to me...listen to Shos. He commands a lot of respect on these boards and he thinks it's great too. We discussed the Rite a while back on another board. Don't let my obnoxious fanaticism about the work dissuade you from giving it another listen.
BenG@beethoven.com
Serge, I totally agree with you about "Eine Kleine Nacht Music." It deserves a long rest--perhaps a few decades would do the trick.
P.S.
Sorry about the above posts...I messed up.

[This message has been edited by BenG (edited 04-24-2001).]

Don't listen to him Audiogirl!!
Seriously, somehow it sounded better when I heard it on the original Fantasia, but then, maybe it was just the pictures helping it along.
I've always liked Stravinski's Firebird (although my '69 Mustang could take it in a drag race when I was a teenager!...sorry) since I was a tike.
-Bill
[This message has been edited by Luegwig (edited 04-24-2001).]

Hello again. BenG, I'll take your advice on "Rites" and perhaps listen again. I enjoy most of the Russians I've heard.
And yeah, I think the Eine Kleine thing has been done to death. Brain development notwithstanding, I know I "just don't get" Mozart.
Adding categories as we go, based on my rather limited exploration....
Favorite composer: Tchaikovsky/Gershwin
Favorite of Beethoven: 7th symphony.
Favorite piece: "The Swan" from S-S's
Carnival of the Animals, or almost anything from Tchaikovsky's ballets.
Favorite opera: Porgy and Bess
Least favorite of Beethoven: 5th symphony, but only because it's also done to death
Most-often butchered of Beethoven: Fur Elise
Favorite tenor: Domingo
Favorite recording? Never met a Klemperer legacy I didn't like.
Favorite soundtrack: anything John Williams did for Lucas or Spielberg.
Favorite Boston Pops conductor: John Williams barely edges out Keith Lockhart.
Let's hope that Luegwig wears his seat belt!

I didn't then, but I do now. Seat belts in cars of that epoch were extremely cumbersome.
--and I don't race. I just drive...exuberantly...when it's safe. To me, driving is an art which I take too seriously sometimes. So you gotta have great art to listen to while you do it!
