Opus... Y?

Postby Hexameron » Sat May 06, 2006 2:45 pm

Ok, I realize I'm copying hal 9000's Opus X idea with this thread, but being new to the forums, I really liked the idea and puzzle of trying to figure out a composer and/or piece by a collection of images. So I've decided to make some of my own. They're not nearly as clever or complex as hal's, but these are just for fun.

The object of mine is similar except you don't have to name the Opus if you don't want to; just the composer and the piece(s) which are hinted at in the images.

You can either PM me or email me your guesses at hexameron@hotmail.com

Sorry hal 9000, I really feel like some weak imitator but it's such a good idea and I thought while we're all baffled by the current Opus X, maybe these will be fun in the meantime.

Here's two easy ones to start:

First:

Second:

These last two are a little harder:

Third:

Fourth:

Congrats to shostakovich for guessing the second picture's composer and piece correctly.

Your guess on the third is incorrect, but you're very close in how you interpreted one of the images in the picture; keep trying.

The third is the 5th from a set of 12 pieces.

Well, of course hal 9000 can crack these trivial mimicries of his Opus X with almost no problem. He got the second and third picture's composer/composition correct. He also got the fourth picture's composer right; just not the composition, but is very close in taking the "Progressive" part as something to do with it.

I'm surprised no one here has gotten the first one yet, though... I thought that was the easiest =\ Well, since no one's gotten it, I'll give it away with a really big clue: the composer can play a whole symphony and concerto on a single piano and likes madwomen on seashores.

Is the first written for the same medium as the 3rd and is one of the most difficult of it's type. I think it is a lso a set of 12...

Hi Hex. How's this for a wild stab at #1?

Poultice for a Dead Parrot by Morris Unraveled.

Also, there's some piano piece called Hexameron. I can't think of whodunnit. Liszt, maybe?

And, with the help of Big's clue on #3, and another look at the red dots, I think I have it. "China" threw me off. It was not a black enough day.

Thud! Did you feel it in Hartford? That magnitude 2 quake in San Diego was me falling off my chair, breathless, helpless, lying onna floor with coffee spray on the keyboard and monitor.

Oh, thank you. It's going to be a good day.

I was in San Diego a number of years ago...
There was construction all over the place back then

Hope all is OK out there!!!!

shostakovich - you got the third picture correct! However, your first guess is so close... you have the composition title almost correct right in your little wild guess!

bignaf - You're right on the third one: the 5th from a set of 12 - now pick a composer =)

Oh, and all of these pictures are hinting at piano composers, but the second picture is not a piano composition... (or is it? maybe for two hands?) That's a big clue.

Tomorrow I'll reveal the answers for all these; I'll just give some hints about each one. They are really huge clues so read only if you want some extra help:

1. The composer was hated by Schumann but loved by Liszt. Sometimes pets deserve funerals too.

2. The composer is high on the list of romantic composers. In 1850 he devoted his life to one medium of composition which resulted in works of battles, mythological figures, mountains, and heroic marches.

3. The composer never chopped loudly at the piano like his contemporaries; he just didn't have the strength. He liked to study black notes as much as white notes.

4. The composer started as one of the greatest virtuosos of his time and did manage to piss off Mozart. His sonatinas have helped so many novice and expert pianists down the progressive road of pianism.

These are giving it away, so no more clues =)

The PM system isn't working, so I can't PM the composer of 3, and writing it here will ruin it for everyone else.
I got the composer of 1 right in my hint. I now know the piece, let's march on.
4 is now very easy, it got gradually easier, now I reached the peak.

I can't figure 2 out but I think the composer is obvious. not too many pieces to choose from.

Well sorry bignaf, but as I'm not getting any more guesses, I'm going to spill out the answers now. The asterisks I place next to the following are the indicated hints in the pictures.

Picture One

Composer: Charles-Valentin Alkan (*Alka*-Seltzer)
Composition: Funeral March for a Dead Parrot, for chorus, 3 oboes & bassoons (*Parrot corpse*)

Picture Two

Composer: Franz Liszt (Grocery *List*)
Composition: Symphonic Poem No. 10 "Hamlet" (*POEMS* by *Shakespeare*)

Picture Three

Composer: Frederic Chopin (*Chopping* board)
Composition: Etude in G flat major Op. 10 No. 5 "Black Keys" (China *STUDY* and *5* red dots on the *black keys* indicating No. 5 for "Black Keys"

Picture Four

Composer: Muzio Clementi (First image is a *clam.* Second image is an *ent* of Tolkien. Third image is a golf tee, or just a *tee.* So put them together and you get clam-ent-tee, and if you got that, well, *Clementi* should pop in your head.
Composition: Six Progressive Sonatina's Op. 36 (The *Progressive* auto sig and the *36* on the clam shell.

For any who didn't send me guesses, how did you do?

 Wow. I . . . er . . . don't know what I was thinking those pictures represented. . . but it sure wasn't that. I figured Listz, but my answers ceased there. I guess I need to learn a lot more about composers, and their works.

I don't think that is a dead parrot.

He's resting or pining for the fjords.
