Respighi didn't write piece called The Roman Trilogy. Read that more carefully... :)

There seems to be only two other 'biggies' by Respighi we haven't guessed, but I'll obey the rules and not take another stab at it.

It sucks that I already submitted a guess. Now I can't submit any more guesses, on nonspecific questions? What exactly is a nonspecific question anyway? Did the composer live? Did the composer write music? :P

I say we have a festival when the composition is finally solved!

Hal,

Good Idea. I'll bring a chilly bottle of wine. :D

Better make it three chilly bottles, and a pitcher. :D

I shall make a guess.

Resphigi's Roman Festivals.

This selection due to the remark about reading the Roman Trilogy entry more carefully, and eliminating Pines and Fountains as having already been guessed and rejected.

Hi Selma. "By George, I think she's got it".

For backup, I'll go with Church Windows. It has a wild St Michael the Archangel movement. Remarkably, the most powerful recorded rendition of that movement came from Dorati and the Minneapolis from mono days. The final tam-tam smash beats all I've heard over the next 50 years. It's incredible. Mercury recordings were spectacular. The final St Gregory movement has a great buildup. The Dorati recording has been superceded there.

and whoever never heard 'em, listen to trittico bocelianno and church windows, and Festivals. Festivals is just as good as Pines and Fountains, IMO, abd more interesting.

I'll have to look around for a suitable "next" 20Q candidate. This may take a few days, I don't know nearly as much as bignaf, or shos, or bones, or hal. Or even OT.

yeah, you did a good job getting really close really early, but you should have tried a few more questions before your guess. Respighi wrote more than one piece. :) :D

A band piece. OK. Thanks for the direction.

I know a number of legitimate classical works that have been adapted to field shows. Excellent. Consider that a gratis clue. But don't all get to guessing at once, I'll need to do some homework so I can answer the yes/no stuff accurately. :big grin:

I have selected the 20Q opus. I will answer guesses as soon as I do that there homework.

Could someone educate me on what a band piece is? (Something more than 'a piece for a band' will help :D )

A "band piece" is any music that can be played by a group of brass and percussion while marching around on a football field. Sometimes there are woodwinds marching with them. There are never strings.

Do not concern yourself with the "band piece" rules; the selected opus is not really a band piece. It has been adapted to use as part of a field show but is really an honest classical opus. Piqaboo only selected this because I have inveigled several of the Sandy Eggans to dci field shows - for more information check http://www.dci.org and read all about it.
