Great string quartets?

Postby Catmando » Mon May 29, 2006 1:47 pm

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to know some other great string quartet compositions (other than Beethoven's, which I am listening to Op. 130 as we speak)?

I just love the Quartetto Italiano Beethoven recordings that I have!

I would like to explore more famous string quartets by other composers. I know Haydn was considered the creator of this genre.

I hear Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, along with Beethoven's string quartets, are some of the best composers of string quartets.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Ray. My "fab four", in order, are:

Dvorak #6 (American)
Borodin #2 ( 2nd and 3rd movements used in Kismet)
Tchaikovsky #1 (Andante cantabile movement well known)
Smetana #1 ( From My Life)

Shos,

Although the numbering of Dvorak's works is often inconsistent, I think that the current numbering for his Opus 96 "American" Quartet is Quartet #12.

This is also one of my all-time favorites.
