Recap, because of page turn:
Composer is a European Russian. The opus is not a 20th century work, nor was it written before 1800. The title starts neither with a numeral nor with the letter "M".

WE HAVE A WINNER!

The opus is indeed Scheherazade. Remember the gratis clue, about "band" music? Santa Clara Vanguard used the music of Scheherazade for their 2004 field show, and it's one of my all time favorites. I was fortunate enough to see the dci finals that year, and it was their best performance of the year.

Since then I have bought the whole thing (it's called a "symphonic suite" rather than "symphony" and maybe one of the music majors can explain the difference in simple words) and the music is to die for.

I liked it best, though, adapted and abbreviated and performed on brass and percussion by kids moving fast, with dancers. On a football field.

Dai Bread has won 20Q#2 at Q#14. His prize is full and uncontested ownership of 20Q#3. Congratulations!
