I fired off my above question while still on Page 1. Since then Navneeth asked about Baroque. So this question is "Could it be by Haydn?"

So far:
1. It's not a symphony
2. It is pre 20th century
3. Composer did not die young (before 40)
4. Not American
5. Is vocal
6. Not Bizet
7. Not a Romance language
8. Not an opera
9. Not an Eastern European composer
10. Not an English composer
11. Not an oriental composer (which would include Pacific locales)
12. Not baroque (i.e. 1600-1750)
13. Not a Scandinavian composer

Unanswered:
14. From a German speaking country?
15. Is it an oratorio??
16. Is it in a 'modern' language or
16a. Hungarian?
17. Is it in German?
18. Is it by Haydn?

Sure are a lot of 'no's. Are we sure it musical. A vocal piece from before the 20th century could be the Lincoln-Douglas debates. :D (I know, I know, its also not an American work).

seeing that someone asked is it from a german speaking country I withdraw my "is it in German?" question. I'll wait for more info to ask another question.

No, No, No!!!! Leave it there. I can think of at least one composer from a German speaking country who wrote non-operatic vocal music in a language other than German.

All those "no" questions serve to narrow down the initial field, which was "all the music ever written by anybody".

I wonder what happens if the composer is either the well known Anon, or the prolific Trad.

Is this work of a german composer, which contains vocal portions (at least), primarily a choral work?
