was it premiered posthumously?

I had to find out more about this story. From Wikipedia:
On January 8, 1687, Lully was conducting a Te Deum in honor of Louis XIV's recent recovery from illness. He was beating time by banging a long staff (a precursor to the baton) against the floor, as was the common practice at the time, when he struck his toe, creating an abscess. The wound turned gangrenous, but Lully refused to have his toe amputated and the gangrene spread resulting in his death on the 22nd of March.

it seems like you are referring to Armide. according to my sources it was premiered after his death (I'n not sure), but it definitely was his last tragedy. so my guess is Armide.

Yes, it is Armide. Correct.

I checked allmusic.com, and there it had Feb. 16, 1686 as the First performance date, and Lully died on Mar. 22, 1687.

Whether that is accurate or not is another question. Where did you get your info, *ig (if you are allowed to reveal your source)?

aha! I see where the misunderstanding occured.
is it his last Tragedy (Tragedie Lyrique)?

you thought this was a guess, "Tragedie Lyrique" being the title. actually Tragedie Lyrique is the name of the tragedy genre which Lully composed. there were also things he called "ballets" that we might call tragedy. Lully's last Tragedie Lirique was Armide.

 My mistake *ig, I did think Tragedie Lyrique was an actual guess on your part. Yes, it is his last tragedie lyrique, and his final opera.

well, since GC's question brought about the answer, and since I do way too many of these, I think GC should get the honors for doing the next one, eh?

I think he might have written a ballet after this (and the ballets involve singing) so that's why I didn't ask if it's his last opera. very good one, I almost gave up after my posthumous question, since Armide is the only Lully opera I know - from studying about it in Music history. according to our textbook it was perfomed posthumously, but I see online many places that state an earlier date...

Whoever wants to start the next one between you and GC, fire away!

It would be good to see The Carouser come up with a 30Q!
