Great Opera Mysteries

you know all those operatic mysteries that aren't resolved in the operas (at least directly)? you don't? here are two examples:
Madame Butterfly: in the middle of the tenor aria "dounque al mondo" the american consul asks the tenor: "milk-lunch o wisky?" and we don't get to hear his answer! what did he choose, milk-punch or whiskey?!?!?! :?:

La boheme: in the 2nd act a child has a prominent solo saying he wants a trumpet and toy horse. the mother doesn't answer! does he get the trumpet and toy horse???!?!

this thread is dedicated to the research of all operatic mysteries, from mysteries whithin the opera, through myyteries regarding the creation of opera, and mysteries regarding opera's creators.

a more serious mystery could be the reason for Rossini's early retirement...

I suspect the answers were edited out in the final cut. You'll have to buy the 'extended edition' CD to see the missing scenes. All will be revealed! :D

yes, I bet that's it!

Careful research by Puccini experts reveals that the tenor indicates a preference for Whisky. since later in the scene the consul asks him: "wisky?" and he answers: "un altro bichierre" - another shot... so apparently he already had one, and we can assume an American gentleman of the 19th century wouldn't just grab a shor of whisky, therefore it must have been the shot he must have recived after the consul's previous "milk punch o wisky" question.

The greatest of these, of course, is why so many are afflicted with the desire to sing an aria once they've been mortally wounded... :?

The great mystery to me is: How could Manon Lescaut die of thirst in New Orleans? One would think they could just walk over to Bourbon Street. They certainly have enough drinking places there.
