If not Stahmer, is it Karlheinz Stockhausen?

Neither Stahmer nor Stockhausen.

Time for a hint.

I've mentioned this composer on the B.com Bulletin Board at least once. (That leaves you about 4500 posts to look through :). I've Googled the composer's name, and found considerable info, but the name does not show up when Googling 'classical composers'. Some of the composer's works (including the answer to this challenge) would not be unwelcome on Beethoven.com, but I don't think they have any of works by this composer in the playlist. I have requested works by this compsoer before, but have never heard any of them played.

Doldinger/Das Boot.

Yes. I was looking for a specific work from the soundtrack, but it was called Das Boot as well, so there was no need to continue. Das Boot was released as a single, and made it onto the pop charts in Germany.

Doldinger is a jazz saxophonist, as well as composer. He performs with the group Passport. He is best known in America for his soundtrack work, specifically Das Boot and The Neverending Story.

Was my hint useful, too much info, or of no use at all?
