It could be a solo piece,
written for the composer's niece,
for picollo, violin, or cello.
I thought he was giving us all a hint and searched for a piece that was dedicated to the composer's niece. What do you know? There was one, and it was none other than Pascaglia on an Old English Tune, by one Rebecca Clarke. But as it turned out, the composition in Shap's mind was from a totally different era.
