I always thought it was a shame she sang soprano. She had a magnificent lower register which wasn't used nearly enough IMO, and would have made an outstanding mezzo. Still, she was an outstanding soprano, and there are more and better roles for sopranos. RIP, Joan Sutherland.

I saw her perform in 1985 when she sang with the Canadian Opera Company. She was Ophelia in Hamlet. I know we will all say her best performances were behind her at that point, but I was thrilled to be there watching a star.
