3 stars for Peter for knowing the quote. Brahms asked much advice of Joachim in writing his violin concerto. I assume that's one of your solutions (there may be more solutions than anyone suspects). Is the other work as well known as the Brahms concerto, or do we have to know something more obscure?
As for Tchaikovsky, he probably needed to ask advice (and maybe did). Leaning on my long term memory, I recall that his concerto was written for Leopold Auer (a relative of actor Mischa Auer, if you would believe), who pronounced it "unplayable". It was Adolph Brodsky who first performed it. If Heifetz was a student of one of them I'd guess Auer.
As for Dinicu-Heifetz, that was Jascha's uncle. Just kidding. My guess is that there was a hora with Dinicu's name attached to it. Dinicu appears nowhere else in any reading I've done. Heifetz, who likely knew Dinicu personally, created a violin-piano arrangement, for which he probably added the word "staccato". Any further arrangement is based on the Heifetz arrangement, as the "Dinicu" version may never have been written down. That is, only the Dinicu-Heifetz version can be found. This is pure guesswork and deduction. I'm too tired to look for sources to check it out, but maybe one of you web wizards can come up with the facts. I'd like to know.
