I have a trivia question......

Postby Flowerboy » Mon Dec 18, 2000 11:51 pm

Whose symphony is said to be "a slender, Grecian maiden between two Nordic Giants"?<P>Lets see if you whiz masters Shos and Treebeau or LVBfurimmer (david) can come up with the correct answer!<P>

It would be a pretty good description of Sibelius's 3rd. I don't know the quote.

okay okay, ur right peter. that was an easy one. heres the next question:<P>there was certain strong relationship between 2 men, composer and virtuoso, that heleped to develop a piece of music. What piece is it, and who were the men? There are 2 answers, but lets see if anyone can get them right anyway.

About the Beethoven, I was distracted by the geography. Couldn't even think of anything, but agree that the Beethoven 4th fits perfectly.<P>About the composer/virtuoso inspired music I have two guesses.<BR>1. Somewhere in the back of my mind I have this dim memory of having heard that Tchaikovsky composed his violin concerto ("The Unplayable") for a particular virtuoso, who was the first to play it, then taught Heifetz.<BR>2. Speaking of Heifetz, there is another violin piece called the "Hora Staccato" which was composed by a guy named Dinicu, but whenever you see the work posted it is credited to "Dinicu-Heifetz."<P>Yes ???<P>Regards,<BR>Tim B.<P>

3 stars for Peter for knowing the quote. Brahms asked much advice of Joachim in writing his violin concerto. I assume that's one of your solutions (there may be more solutions than anyone suspects). Is the other work as well known as the Brahms concerto, or do we have to know something more obscure?<P>As for Tchaikovsky, he probably needed to ask advice (and maybe did). Leaning on my long term memory, I recall that his concerto was written for Leopold Auer (a relative of actor Mischa Auer, if you would believe), who pronounced it "unplayable". It was Adolph Brodsky who first performed it. If Heifetz was a student of one of them I'd guess Auer. <P>As for Dinicu-Heifetz, that was Jascha's uncle. Just kidding. My guess is that there was a hora with Dinicu's name attached to it. Dinicu appears nowhere else in any reading I've done. Heifetz, who likely knew Dinicu personally, created a violin-piano arrangement, for which he probably added the word "staccato". Any further arrangement is based on the Heifetz arrangement, as the "Dinicu" version may never have been written down. That is, only the Dinicu-Heifetz version can be found. This is pure guesswork and deduction. I'm too tired to look for sources to check it out, but maybe one of you web wizards can come up with the facts. I'd like to know.

congratulations shos you got the number one answer right - brahms and joachim. but theres still one other - thats rated the 2ndly most friendly concerto - not the Beethoven. Heres a hint - its a very popular concerto. wehn i get back from work, ill expect the answer.

I was going to plump for Mozart & Anton Stadler (basset clarinettist), who were very good friends. Stadler must have assisted Mozart in the composition of both the Clarinet Quintet, K.581, and the Clarinet Concerto, K.622, since Mozart was not proficient on this (even then) old-fashioned instrument.

I'm sorry for the stupid question. I guess now that it was very broad, and there are many answers to this question. Maybe i should have said VIOLIN concerto. maybe you can guess what im thinking of now. Maybe someone should try guessing my next question, which im going to topic right now.

Hi Flowerboy. Since you said it's a very popular violin concerto, that boils it down to a handful. I guessed Mendelssohn, but had to look up the violinist's name: Ferdinand David.
