To All,
Shostakovich,Peter,FlowerBoy,
What can one say? Wonderful!Went too fast! One trys to listen to each note, hopefully to suspend time,to take it all in.You don't want it to end!But end it did,to five standing ovations!
Donna Brown became ill,and was replaced by the very talented Dominique Labelle.
The Choral section was awesome!Avery Fisher Hall Must have the best acoustics of any major Hall.
Started a little late, because of the snowstorm, but one of the good things about NYC is the subways. It's not bothered by snow.
The Master,I think, would have been proud. What an Orchestra! Not one flaw! Not one misplaced note! You can feel the passion that the entire Orchestra has for this Symphony.
I'll never forget the experience!
True,Masur,is no Bernstein or Von Karajan. But who is?But he knows his orchestra, and this work, and conducted flawlessly!
What can one say?......Ode To Joy!

[This message has been edited by wirewolf (edited 12-31-2000).]

Wirewolf, I am so glad that despite the horrific winter wx, the show went on, and you were able to attend this magnificent performance, in one of the finest East coast venues imaginable.
All this excitement triggered an association of memories I had while a senior in high school. One day I cornered our choir director, and asked him if we could perform the ninth. He said there were too many high A's in there for the sopranos, and he was concerned that our orchestra couldn't cut the mustard. <g>
Our choir took a field trip to NYC that year to see Marilyn Horne perform Carmen at the Met.
During intermission, we spotted Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward having a glass of wine, and me, being the bold and brazen teenager, asked him for his autograph, while my buddies looked on in shock and horror. <g>
He said, "Young lady, I don't give autographs", and I was quite mortified, not so much by the rejection, but more by his intense stare and blue eyed gaze. <g>
Anyhoo, the only treasure I could squirrel away with that day, was some stationery notecards from the souvenir shop, with the printed copies of Beethoven's hand written manuscript of........
you got it, the climactic bars of the chorale
movement of the ninth.
Cheers~Leslie

[This message has been edited by ~Leslie (edited 12-31-2000).]

Wirewolf, I knew you`d have a fantastic night at the symphony Image
Leslie, I always used to admire Paul Newman, but now, well.....
Reminds me of the story of the waitress, working in a New York bar, circa 1974, who decided that she simply had to have the autograph of the famous guy to whom she`d been serving drinks all evening. When she finally got up the nerve to ask him, he started coming on to her. She feistily fought him off before succeeding in sending him crashing to the ground. He was then bodily ejected from the premises, swearing & screaming, protesting his innocence. Afer the waitress had recomposed herself, she said: "gee, it is so hard to take when you discover that your idol is a complete a**hole!"
The gentleman in question was John Lennon. But, hey, at least he was happy to sign autographs!!
