Shos,
Samantha Fox & Bo Derek did not distract me as much as I thought they might. If I say I have it, would you call it The Incredible Fluke?

Looks like I responded so quickly, that others don`t know there`s a new quiz here (the topic was falling down the board at an alarming rate)!

No, Peter, it's not Walter, but a very close contemporary. It WAS an incredible pun, though. I'll have to remember that one.
An additional hint is that the Yankee threesome honors a man whose first name is the same as the mystery man's.
For the record, John e-mailed me the right answer, but don't let that stop any of our other detectives.
Shos

Gee, John, you can be insufferable at times! Have at ye, sir; my crown of greatness will not be relinquished easily!!
Shos, it was the Three New England Sketches which led me to Walter Piston (almost typed Walter Pidgeon then!). I feel more secure with my next choice. If I'm right, should I be singing seasonal songs with one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Hi Peter and John. You are both great. Three New England Sketches is SOOOOO close. I think John hit another homer.
To go back a notch, I picked Rimsky-Korsakov previously because his birthday fell in March. Tomorrow he will be 157. He doesn't sound it.
His first symphony was written while he was a junior officer in the navy (a teeny-bopper, I believe). It was a hit. After working himself from gifted amateur, member of the "mighty handful", to its nominal leader, he finally decided to give absolute music a try. Thus the 3rd symphony. Unfortunately, his native gift for nationalist, "informal", music did not carry over to stuffy symphonies. At it's premiere, most of his friends were shocked silent. Borodin, who never said a nasty word, said "Nice, very nice". R-K soon returned to doing what he did best.
Shos

Putting the Schuman bio to rest, he was president of Lincoln Center for a while. His biblical ballet was Judith. The Mighty Casey and New England Triptych (his most popular work, recommended to all) are the other references. Of his 10 symphonies, #3 was highly touted, joining a trio of highly touted #3s, Harris's and Copland's being the others. See you soon in a new heading.
Shos

Hello all; I just want to say that I am going to start a new Beethoven message board at PianoTonight.com. You can start one of your choice, too... just go there. The rest of the site is awesome, too!
There's Concert listings, mp3s, and everything!
And I'm not working for them or anything- I've just been emailing the student who started it, and he is really nice and wants to get a classical community together.
see ya,
Lynn
