Artistic Endeavors

Postby violin » Mon May 19, 2003 4:38 pm

This topic came up at a recent concert, thought I'd ask here to see what responses I get from this diverse group. While I was showing off my daughter's later artistic creation the subject came up of how many different art forms all of us musicians in the orchestra were invovled in. In the orchestra there were painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, potters, textile artists, jewelers, and woodworkers to name a few. It seems that once attracted to one art we artists always want to do it all. What other art are you involved in?

I hand weave small pictures. I embroider and create embroidery designs. Together my mother and I used to create quilt designs. (We would create a design and I would do the applique, she would do the quilting.) My daughter is a painter and is now becoming involved in photography. My husband is taking pottery classes along with photography.

Does being a poet count?
Some of my poetry has been published in my school's newspaper.

I must admit that my own creativity is limited to electronic design, and that's usually just a problem solving exercise, although a certain amount of artistry and elegance is visible in many electronic designs.

My brother-in-law was a concert violinist, but he hated having to play with other people and blend in (he was afraid his mistakes would be noticed). He has taken up painting, but he drives a sand and gravel truck during the day.

I photograph, but I don't know how artistic it is.

You know, Barfle, people say I don't like to blend when I'm singing in a group. Hmmmm... ;)

Woodworking.
Juggling.
Making goofy comments on everyone else's serious threads.

All the work of a serious artist!

Let's see. I quilt (I like piecing the tops best).

I'm the costumer-of-last-resort when a kid can't be fitted by the Junior Theater collection. (I got to do TWO costumes for an adorable 5-year-old playing Gracie Shinn last fall).

I knit.

I cook. Don't know if it's artistic, but it gets appreciated.

I do cross stitch.

I do not decorate.

I am profoundly drawing-impaired.

If I write anything, it's prose. And usually to the point and frequently sarcastic.

Oh, yeah. I whistle VERY well, and my singing voice is usually not actively offensive.

I use to be a competitive spitter, but it's a tough sport if you don't stay in shape; sadly, my lip is not what it used to be.

I play the violin.

Occasionally, I write.

I've been known to draw (although I'm not very fast).

I consider marksmanship to be something of an art.

Lately, I've been doing some leatherwork.

For me, pruning is an art.

I grow taters and corn, just for the fun of it.

I whistle — not badly.

I sing, too.

It seems that my greatest artistic ability, though, is irritating people.

I claim no artistic ability whatsoever, but I do admire it. The track this thread is taking reminds me of a story I heard about Jackson Pollock, known as Jack the Dripper for the painting gimmick that made him famous.

In his youth he and his father would sometimes go behind a barn in snowy Cody Wyoming and pee curves in the snow. Supposedly this early "training" inspired his later paint swirls. The story sounds apocryphal, but I heard it from a person who heard it at a Pollock symposium.

So Haggis, you may be onto something big time here. Too bad you shared it with us. Artistic types are always "borrowing" ideas. Good luck, but don't quit your day job.

Hi! I'm new to the board and also talentless but I do appreciate the music played here. As far as talent goes, I don't even know how to spit(let alone competitively). I would like to know how to discover and foster any hint of creative (dormant) talent in me, enough to quit my day job. I need an alternative to flipping burgers after retiring or sticking happy faces on customers entering Walmart. Should I just start spitting a lot until I get good at it? Is competitive spitting tougher than curling?

OT, I didn't know you had snow in Escondido. Tell me you're not using the ice rink! :(

Serenity, you've fallen into bad company. Wickedness and bad puns everywhere. And Barfle petting a tiger (I'm so jealous).

You're on your own. Just take up hobbies you like. Good luck on the board! ;)

Welcome to the lowest level, Serenity! :)

Selma, no excuse. I knew a woman who had, uh, evidence that she could write her name in the snow.
