Ambient?

Postby Luis » Sun Jan 14, 2001 11:24 pm

I'm looking for some recommendations on some little "strange" music. Firstly, about CM, things like the last movement of Holst's Planets (Neptune, the Mystic). You know, music that has its stress more on ambient harmonies rather than melody. But WAIT! I still want music, not "sound"...
On the other hand, I’m looking for other instrumental non classical (no problem if electronic) music which is sometimes called "new age", "ambient", "atmospheric" or things like that. Here, don’t recommend me crap music such as Kitaro, Yanni etc.! I want GOOD, long and complex music, not a 4 minute “easy listening” song! The best contemporary music I’ve founded so far (which is not that good anyway) is Constance Demby’s Novus Magnificat. It’s a bit naïf, to tell you the truth, but not bad at all. If you have Napster I’d suggest you to download NM part one. Be careful, about this one, it’s almost 30mb! but some of you could find it interesting. Ah... and don’t download more stuff by her other than NM.
Please recommend me something and tell me what you think about Constance Demby if you download it.
Thanks, Luis

[This message has been edited by Luis (edited 01-15-2001).]

I could suggest Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells 2" (Not ONE!) which is a brilliant piece of music with great tunes. But be warned: Olfield hasn't a great reputation among "serious" listeners.
Michael

Have you ever considered some of the more turn table/techno ambient style? I am a huge fan of a style called "trip hop". It's a lot like what you are describing. I can recomend some CD's if you like?

Luis, I'm going to step out on a limb here and play on your cultural roots and tastes for the masculine, and energetic. This recording's title tune may be too long to d/l from Napster, but has the traces of ambient you are looking for.
The standards of musicianship are high, the compositions are blends of various genres and ethnic music.
As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls
by the Pat Metheny Group~

Hi Luis,
I'm not sure of what you are looking for, but Neptune the Mystic reminds me of Sirenes from Debussy's Nocturnes for Orch. It, too, has a wordless chorus. Is Ligeti's Atmospheres anything of interest? It accompanied the Monolith in 2001.
Shos
