Stairway to Haven

My first time tuning into this station I heard what was a classical version of Stairway to Haven by Led Zepplin. Does anyone know which came first and who wrote and performs the classical version?<P>Thank You

Eyalgoldman,<P>Led Zeppelin originally performed Stairway to Heaven and it's considered one of the all time greatest and definitely one of the most requested rock songs ever. It was recorded approximately 25 years ago, and as far as the classical version, it's the London Symphony Orchestra performing. Something fun for all to think about.<P>I once had a friend that would talk about the most popular or famous song by any pop group as that group's "Stairway To Heaven."<P>Examples: Celine Dion's "Stairway To Heaven" would probably be "My Heart Will Go On" from the movie "Titanic." Billy Joel's "Stairway To Heaven" may possibly be "Piano Man."<P>Beethoven's "Stairway To Heaven" may possibly be the 5th symphony. Mozart's may be "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik", and so on.<P>Yes, it's silly, and I've had it in my head for almost 20 years. Now you all can have fun thinking of your favorite composer or performers "Stairway To Heaven."

Neil Sedaka also had a hit back in the late fifties/early sixties with a song called "Stairway to Heaven" - totally different to the Led Zep song.<P>Michael

Led Zeppelin`s Stairway to Heaven is the most-requested non-existent single ever in British record shops, although it was issued as a 45 in the US. I`d say that the Beatles` StH is She Loves You (THE catalyst song for British Beatlemania), but in the US, I guess you`d go for Hey Jude (Leslie?).<P>Treebeau, I`m interested that you regard Billy Joel`s Piano Man as his StH. It must be the transatlantic thing again, but here in the UK, his "theme song" hardly resonates at all. Over here, his most famous song is Uptown Girl; in fact, he was virtually unknown before Just The Way You Are.

Symphonic Stairwell to Zeppelin? Ye hammer of the Gods, the song doth remain the same. Mister mythical Page must be musing on that one. Eh, he was a classical wannabe at heart, playing his gtr with a violin bow. <g> Best cover I've heard of this so far is by guitarist Stanley Jordan. To be frank though, I was never aware of any single release of it here, that one is news to me. <P>As for the most played out Beatles in the U.S.? I can't tell you...but their Beatles 1 is still number one, none too shabby for some rough-shod lads from Liverpool.<P>Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are rode the airwaves here for what seemed like an eternity, probably alot longer than his marriage to his Uptown Girl, Christie Brinkley. <P>

Peter,<BR> Actually, "Piano Man" isn't what I would consider Billy Joel's StH. I was just trying to illustrate the point and that song popped into my head. I didn't want to do much thinking so I just went with that. "Uptown Girl" (which another old friend of mine used to sing as Uptown Smurf) was pretty durn popular here too, as well as "Just the Way You Are."<P>I like how you just went along with this and even started the "StH" abbreviation. Thanks Leslie......you have named the Stones StH.........Page & Plant came through the States a few years back, Unleded Tour(95?), and I got the chance to see them in the Tacoma Dome......Was a wonderful collection of their past stuff w/some rearraingements and accompanied by members of the Seattle Symphony as well as an Egyption band that was touring with them.....I believe that they called themselves the Kings of Cairo, or was that The Egypytian Kings? Cant remember.....But I will say it was an Ecclectic experiance and I belive that about 4 generations of music listeners were there.....what a Great Show......... <P>Hail To The King Baby!<p>[This message has been edited by Scotty (edited 01-19-2001).]
