The Gulf War.

Postby lliam » Fri Oct 24, 2003 9:27 am

Over the last two evenings I've watched 'The Gulf War' part 1 and 2 on the Hallmark Channel:
=============================================

This compelling two-part mini-series charts events surrounding one of the most controversial military campaigns of the 20th century.

A high-powered cast, headed by Ted Danson (Cheers), Brian Dennehy (Jack Reed) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Single White Female), bring all their class and charisma to this exploration of how the shocking after-effects of Operation Desert Storm and the subsequent mystery of ‘Gulf War Syndrome’ were for so long ignored by the American authorities.

Danson plays Jim Tuite, a Vietnam veteran who turns his retirement into a moral crusade to expose the true effects of this debilitating illness on the soldiers and their families.

The same fight went on here in the UK, to get compensation for every soldier affected with
'Gulf war syndrome'

Some say George W. Bush quit drinking because of this incident...

Back in his party days, Dubya got behind the wheel after a few too many. He started the car and stepped on the gas. He was driving for a while, when suddenly a white ghost face appeared in the window. George saw it and began screaming.

He stepped on the gas harder, but the face floated right in the window. George floored it - the speedometer read 110mph but the face did not disappear. A white hands gestured for him to roll down the window. Not knowing what else to do, he rolled it down slowly.

The wrinkled old face smiled and said, "Do you want help getting out of the mud?"

I'm absolutely fed up to the high teeth hearing about our troops being charged with abuse of prisoners in Iraq. The Iraqis where caught looting. Now if they had been caught stealing off their own people! But we don't chop hands off. What do you guys make of this latest insult on coalition troops? I think it's a good way to recruit more terrorists.
===============================================
A UK soldier accused of abusing civilians in Iraq is a war hero who had been obeying orders, a court martial has been told.
Cpl Daniel Kenyon, 33, denies several abuse charges at a court martial of three soldiers in Osnabruck, Germany.

His defence counsel, Joseph Giret, said orders given by commanding officers were to blame for the alleged abuse.

L/Cpl Mark Cooley also denies all charges. L/Cpl Darren Larkin admits one assault but denies another charge.

The three, all from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, face a total of nine abuse allegations.

Mr Giret blamed a military plan known as Operation Ali Baba - referring to the story Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves - for the alleged offences.

Camp commander Maj Dan Taylor, responsible for Operation Ali Baba, told his troops to catch looters who had been stealing food and "work them hard", the court heard.

Col Clapham told the court the soldier who took the photographs to be developed was Fusilier Gary Bartlam, from Tamworth, who was convicted of a number of offences at an earlier hearing.

The court martial, expected to last three to four weeks, comes days after a US soldier was sentenced to 10 years in jail for abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib jail, near Baghdad.

Lliam,
I agree with you.
Soldiers are being used as scapegoats to protect the higher ups. The U.S. Soldier who got 10 years received a raw deal. The terrorists know these soldiers were following orders and are laughing at us.
Shame on the media for publishing the pictures.

This is a bit rough, but we should recall our troops, get the good people of Iraq out of there and nuke the terrorists now before they nuke us.

I saw a report yesterday on how easy it would be to smuggle a dirty bomb into the port in Los Angeles.

Lliam,

My wife has family in Blackpool!
Her Aunt came for a visit to surprise my wife for a "Milestone" Birthday back in November.
One of these days I'm coming to England for a visit.

I love Blackpool, there's so much to do. My sister lives 4 miles North of Blackpool a lovely little Lancashire town called: Cleveleys which is 4 miles from the fishing port of: Fleetwood my wife and I go up there 6 - 7 times a year. Staying in Lancashire I've got a Brother who lives in Chorley and our eldest son lives at a place called: Morecombe, which is by the sea.

Go for it Howard. ;)

Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds.

London, 2Hours by car, 1 1/2 hrs by train. Liverpool, 1hour by car, 45mins by train.

Serenity, No I'm not a closet soccer hooligan.
I supported my local soccer(football) team, Walsall F.C (The Saddlers) from a boy till my late teens. It was through 'Hooliganism' I stopped going to watch football. I don't even watch footbal on TV anymore with the exception of, 'The World Cup'.

Sorry to hear that Lliam. I didn't mean to bring up any painful memories. By the question I just wanted to know if you're the type of guy who paints on the team colors and gets a little loud at the stadium.

I too enjoy watching the World Cup every 4 years. Sports fans can go over the edge so I play it safe and watch on TV. I'll just take the kids to the little league games.

Do you follow the NFL games at all over there? The NFL has been trying to expand the sport but I guess it can get as "foreign" as watching rugby from "Down Under".
