Yeah, I hear he is going to concentrate on his singing career. He's starting a duet with Ashlee Simpson.

While I was elated to read of Mr. Ashcroft's retirement, let's not forget that the people who appointed him are going to appoint his replacement.

I was reading a bit about Gonzales and it seems he's pretty moderate. Some of the more conservative folks in the Republican party are not fond of him since he is more middle of the road. But as a judge on the TX Supreme court he was under fire a few years ago for helping to cover up Bush's drunk driving records. He's big on civil rights and pro choice (based on his voting record in TX S.Court) but he's also voted in favor for few bad environmental rulings in TX.

Hispanicmagazine.com did a big article on him and really painted him as Bush's best friend and willing to do what ever he is asked of by Bush. It was not very flattering and made him out to be a lap dog for Bush. Which also has me worried if he is that easy to roll over.

I saw this thread a few days ago and thought for sure it would be about Arafat. I should have known better. The world is so upside-down.

When/if Arafat's death accomplishes anything tangible towards solving the problems of the Middle East, I'll celebrate his passing. Until then, I'll remain:

puerile.

It appears that most of Bush's new cabinet appointments are being drawn from his inner circle, which means those of us who voted against Bush are unlikely to be any happier, and perhaps less happy with his cabinet replacements.

There's hope that Arafat's death will bring positive change, but I'm with OT.. Gotta wait and see if the hardliners (Who are absolutely insistent that Israel be destroyed) can be set aside. Israel might not be the best neighbor, but neither have the Arab countries been a good neighbor to Israel. If Israel is given the right to exist, and Israel can be satisfied with a portion of it's historic territory, (Yes yes, I know, LONG long history, but it's what happens with societies that exist to remember.) there's a chance at resolving the Israel issue. Break down any of those suppositions and there's an escalating problem, ick.

EJA, I notice that even though the thread started the day Arafat finally died, it was started at 00:51.

Don't be too disillusioned. Arafat probably hadn't kicked off yet and broke the headlines. I can't remember when I first heard the news.

Besides, I'm falling right in line, Arafat's successor will tell if his passing was a good thing. The Israel/Palastine issue is really tenuous right now.

If I remember correctly one of Bush's cabinet is an advocate of a Palestinian state and it was in my head that it was either Wolfowitz or Ashcroft. So maybe the two incidents fit together anyway.

Maybe one of you folks knows.?

Meanwhile, while some Dems feel Gonzales would have been the 'best' Supreme Court nominee they'd see from this administration, other folks point out things like these when speaking of the nominee for AG.

If that's the 'best' the administration has to offer, what follows will surely make it to our 'creepy tales' thread. Wait....I'm getting a vision.....Justice........Ashcroft??!!!

Whew - Justice Ashcroft could singlehandedly revive the domestic textiles industry, as a side effect of his efforts to clothe all the naked lady statues in the US.
