Paying off the election bet

Postby GreatCarouser » Mon Nov 15, 2004 2:18 pm

I received many fine suggestions but there was no consensus so I started thinking......
I thought it wouldn't have been in the spirit of the wager to donate to something politically motivated (ACLU, Dem or Rep parties etc.). I wanted something non-sectarian, religiously and socially. Since so much of this election revolved around servicemen and their families I was able, with Shapley's assistance, to locate a recipient. The donation went to the Armed Forces Relief Trust. A link to their website follows for the interested: Armed Forces Relief Trust

I wasn't involved in the bet, but I'll match it.

I'm also ready to pay my debt to society. To the best of my recollection, my list of charities included:

Catholic Near East Welfare Association
Catholic Medical Mission Board
Catholic Church of the Ukraine
Catholic Church of Russia
Catholic Church of Northern Alaska
Thomas Aquinas College
St. Jude's Children's Hospital (Memphis, TN)
Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital (St. Louis, MO)
Dominican Sisters of Hope
Good Counsel

To that I will add

the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society
Armed Forces Relief Trust
Army Emergency Relief

Haggis had a couple of suggestions, as well, but I can't find them here on the BBB. I'm willing to accept nominations for others, but will reject those that run counter to my Catholic beliefs, or which have a record of poor performance. (These rules I set down upon taking the wager.

you may make your vote by PM or here on this forum, and I'll add up them to the best of my ability.

Under the original wager, I owe $50, but I have offered to put up another $50, which I will donate to the second-highest vote-getter (and I don't mean to John Kerry!).

I'm voting for either of the children's hospitals. There's an excellent Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, MA. I might even donate $50 there, I'm so moved by Republican (and non-Republican) largesse. I'm proud of you guys.

I am ashamed to admit I forgot completely about the Armed Forces Relief Trust, even, as I was reminded by a friend, that a common friend sits on AFRT's board!

I donated $50 to AFRT last night. I tried to post the HTM acknowledgement but lack the technical expertise to do so.

In appreciation to Shos for his patience and kindness in answering my questions about classical music, I'm sending $50 to this hospital.

Happy Thanksgiving to each one of you.

I've sent $50.00 to St. Judes Children's Hospital and $50.00 to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

You can find more about them here:

http://www.stjude.org/

http://www.cardinalglennon.com/internet/home/net10hom.nsf/?open

I'm personally familiar with both of these fine organizations.

May God bless you all for your generosity. It seems at the B.comBB that we were all winners in this election cycle.

P.S., You can donate online by following the links provided. That's what I did.

Haggis, I've been thinking about donating to that charity. There are some kindred spirits there. Actually, I've been thinking about enlisting, too.

Is that an admission that the war is being mismanaged? Is the Pentagon having a bake sale yet?
