Haggis,

Sorry, I had forgotten about Carter's foreign policy jaunts as ex-president. I guess I've gotten used to ignoring him, mostly.

Maybe he should stick to building houses for humanity.

Wow! They got it built pretty fast! From concept painting to carrier ops in <2 days!

I meant to add a caption, but I clicked the "post" button too quickly.

This is a view of a Nimitz class carrier. If you look at it compared to the concept drawing, you'll notice there seems to be difference in scale, unless the Bush is flying smaller jets.

Haggis - I concede that Carter was out of his league when it came to foreign policy. If my meager grasp of history is right, we have his man Brezinski to thank for both Iran and Afghanistan.

Carter was easily duped. I lived in S Fla when Castro emptied his jails via Mariel boatlift.

He was simply too unsophisticated (and kind) for the times.

I think there are also two conflicting perspectives at work here.

Carter did/does have a vision of the U.S. as conforming to the world, whereas there is an element in our leadership and society that would rather the world conform to the dictates of the U.S.

The article Haggis quotes calls Carter a traitor. I guess I find that as plausible as Haggis does that GWB/PNAC are a bunch of greedy liars seeking world domination.

So,

Once the vessel is launched, will the men who fly from her decks be Bush Pilots?

If the enemy fires at her and misses, will they be said to be "Beating around the Bush"?

Will the water under the keel be measured in "Bush Leagues"?

Inquiring minds want to know!

It was a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed post, Shap. Beethoven Barracks needed the humor.

I'd like to run up to the ship and paste some politically incorrect bumper sticker on it.

Will the sailors be so inept that the saying will go : One in the hand is worth two in the Bush?

I think a "Kerry/Edwards" sticker would do quite nicely, plus one for gay rights and one pro-choice.

Beware the humorless individuals with the rifles. Also, the fence around the quay wall is not an insignificant obstacle. And there's a containment boom around the water side of the ship.

I used to drive the naval individuals on quayside nuts when the ship was docking, by referring to the operation as "parking the boat". Great fun.

That's how we referred to it in the submarine navy.

It's like Scotsmen who get their feathers ruffled when you call their tartan kilts "plaid skirts". No sense of humor whatsoever.

There was a picture of the newly commissioned Carter in today's Hartford Courant. Carter was there, saying the name of the sub was a greater honor than becoming president. I'm sure that played well with the audience. There's a lot of local pride in the fact that it was built in Groton, CT. We're still stung by Sikorsky losing the Marine 1 contract.

The article also mentioned that Carter was the only president to have served on a sub.

Here's a photo of the USS Jimmy Carter(SSN-23) on commisioning day.

<img src="http://www.operatenor.100megs24.com/ussjc.jpg" alt=" - " />

I didn't realize it's the last of the Seawolf class. I wonder what they'll come up with next?

It is 100 ft longer than any other Seawolf. The extra length is to accommodate extra spook gear. Very impressive!
