A Mill or mille

The U.S. Coinage Act of 1792 describes milles and other subdivisions of the dollar:

” That the money of account of the United States shall be expressed in dollars or units, dismes or tenths, cents or hundredths, and milles or thousandths, a disme being the tenth part of a dollar, a cent the hundredth part of a dollar, a mille the thousandth part of a dollar, and that all accounts in the public offices and all proceedings in the courts of the United States shall be kept and had in conformity to this regulation.”

Tokens in this denomination were issued by some states and local governments (but not by the U.S.) for such uses as payment of sales tax. These were of inexpensive material such as tin, aluminum, plastic or paper. Rising inflation depreciated the value of these tokens in relation to the value of their constituent materials; this depreciation led to their eventual abandonment. (Virtually none were made after the 1960s.)

During the late 1700’s and thru much of the 1800’s the U.S. Mint issued ½ cent, 2 cent, and three cent coins

Fyi, “disme” became “dime.” The name of the coin comes from the French disme (modern French spelling dîme), meaning "tithe" or "tenth part," from the Latin "decima".

A friend of mine had a small chest full of mills of the plastic variety. I had not realized they were not issued by the U.S. government.

His father ran a bakery at one time, and the mills were accumulated there over the years. They were sometimes given in payment, but never issued as change, hence their accumulation. At the end of the day, any mills received during the day were put in a box in the back of the store. When the store closed, the box was taken home, where they sat in a shed for years. We used to use them as poker chips.

Thanks, Haggis, for the additional info. I've never seen a mille token. There's still a mil rate in real estate. That's the only reason I ever heard of this fictional thousandth of a dollar.

BLAME CANADA!
(South Park-style)

Sheila: Time's have changed
Our kids are kids are getting worse
They wont obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Sharon: Should we blame the government?
Liane: Or blame society?
Dads: Or should we blame the images on TV?
Sheila: No, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their beady little eyes
And flappin heads so full of lies
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: We need to form a full assault
Everyone: It's Canadas fault!
Sharon: Don't blame me
For my son Stan
He saw the darn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
Liane: And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to **** myself!
Sheila: Well, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
It seems that everythings gone wrong
Since Canada came along
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Some Guy: There not even a real country anyway
Ms. McCormick: My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer it's true
Instead he burned up like a piggy on a barbecue
Everyone: Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Sheila: Heck no!
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their hockey hubbabaloo
Liane: And that bitch Anne Murray too
Everyone: Blame Canada
Shame on Canada
The smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus

From Mark Steyn reports the the Palestine House in Toronto is hosting Abd al-Bari Atwan, editor of the London newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi. Atwan is, in Steyn's words, "a celebrity eliminationist" who declared on TV that "if the Iranian missiles strike Israel, by Allah, I will go to Trafalgar Square and dance with delight."

Word of Atwan's appearance sparked a demonstration by the Jewish Defense League. During the demonstration, Palestine House officials were caught on tape telling Jewish protesters "You need another Holocaust" and "We love jihad... We love killing dogs... your bitches with you."

I'm not one of those who wants the government to prosecute hate speech. But I thought Canada, which launched proceedings against Steyn for "Ïslamphobic" utterances, had laws against this sort of thing.

It turns out that, far from prosecuting the Jew haters at the Palestine House, the Canadian government is subsidizing them. This means, among other things, that the appearance of the jihadist Atwan is effectively being underwritten by Canadian taxpayers.

Man faces jail after protecting home from masked firebomb attackers.

“His surveillance cameras caught the attackers lobbing at least six Molotov cocktails at his house and bombing his doghouse, singeing one of his Siberian Huskies. But when Mr. Thomson handed the video footage to Niagara Regional Police, he found himself charged with careless use of a firearm.”

As I said, unserious

That happens here too, especially in rural areas. Almost all farmers have rifles and/or shotguns, for hunting and for putting down livestock where necessary. Occasionally a farmer lets fly at someone trying to steal his gear or his animals, and the police take the easy target.

Public opinion is always on the side of the farmers, and the judges agree. They're not entirely stupid.

See what happens when you run around in your underwear brandishing a gun and shouting the odds? You look like an idiot and get arrested.

Dai is right. The police are stupid.

And about the debt link you published. Yep our Conservative right-winged government has sadled us with debt and a bigger bloody government too boot. Conservatives (and I used to be one) claimed to want a smaller government. Not this government. Stephen Harper is a George Bush wannabe. Believe me. He doesn't like Obama which is why Haggis and Shap would love this guy. His government has created a new Ministry called the Ministry of State for Seniors. Huh? The Minister for Seniors, you would love Haggis. He was a cop who believed in shooting first and asking questions later or just saying "*?!** you peasants, I can do what I want". And Canada invested in fighter jets. Huh? Peace loving Canada? Bought fighter jets? Billions spent. You can bet it is to fly over the Artic and say, GET OUT U.S., GET OUT Russia. "The Artic and its resources belong to Canada. We will tell YOU when you can have some." And Canada is investing in new jails based on unreported crime. Say that again? Yup. UNREPORTED CRIME. Socialist Canada? We have turned our back on spending on foreign aid, we have turned our back on climate change, we have turned our back on our commitments to the world. We have become the new worst citizens of the world. Where is Olberman now?

You should move here as we are move further to the right. Ad we will AND we have health care. Only takes three months of residency to get it, you know.

I'd go to the U.S. but you guys are broke :P and China will come to collect one day. :D

I know this is a joke, but I feel many have a misconception about this. 70% of U.S. debt is domestically held. Debt held by foreign nations, China holds about 7.5%. This is also the reason default is so unlikely, as good sized chunks of those Treasuries are held by Social Security, etc.

Apparently after a certain age you have to pony up some serious money to get in. A friend married a Canadian girl and they moved to her home on an Island off the Pacific coast. He was in his early 50's and to be eligible for health care he had to pony up some money. He never said how much but implied that he paid over ten thousand to qualify.

I'll stay in Texas, thank you ver much. Remember "Canada: where winter spends its Summer"

The police have to enforce the law as written.
The judge / jury figure out circumstantial effects etc.
Are the police also arresting the miscreants as well as those owners brandishing weapons?
So that both sets end up in court? If so, then not stupid, simply constrained by the requirements of the job.
