Help finding a British veteran

Postby annettehala » Tue Jan 10, 2006 1:33 am

Hello, this is Annette's little sister, April. I'm hoping that someone with more experience in geneology research and/or who lives in Britain who can help me.

The oddest thing happened to me today. An elderly Japanese lady came to the door and asked in broken English if I could help her. She's looking for someone named "Jeff Singleton" who was here in Japan with the British military (she didn't say what branch of service) waaaaayyy back in 1946/47. She said she was a waitress in the officer's club on the base here back then and they became friends. They've exchanged letters all these years, but now she's lost contact and she's desperate to find him again. She said he was from London, and also traveled to Singapore, Kenya, and Zimbabwe while he was in the military. That's all I know.

Does anyone on here have any suggestions at all about what I should do? I've been searching the internet all afternoon and have come up with nothing.

How about a reward? Let's say that someone finds information that helps me find this guy...how about I promise that I will force my sister to make more posts with pictures? :D Deal?

Cheers,

April

April,

I'm sorry I can't help you. Hopefully DavidS or Lliam can be of service. I just wanted to say 'hello'. Great to hear from you, and do tell Annette to pop in from time to time, even when she doesn't have travel photos to post!

P.S., In the "Expresso Kampuchea" thread, tanja tells of her efforts to find a French veteran who lost a lighter in Indochina in the '50s. Perhaps something in he posts may be helpful in your search.

I've found several people in the US using peoplesearch.com, but they don't have information on people living in Britain.

I would expect that there would be such a service available for people in Britain as well, but that's just my supposition.

One thing I did find when I was looking for people to attend my HS reunion is that there are many dead ends, and some people won't be found no matter how hard you try.

Since he was there in the 1940s, he's undoubtedly fairly old at this point, so it might be useful (although depressing) to search death records. I know I found a lot more deaths among my classmates than I had expected.

Good luck, though, and I hope Annette and Jeff have a happy reunion soon!

Hi April,

Can you get any more specifics from the woman? Anything "googleable"?

It would help to know which branch of the military. Does she remember the color of his uniform? Anything noteworthy about it? Who used that particular military facility during the time frame in question?

If she exchanged letters with him, what is his last known address? You might be able to write to the local postmaster and get something forwarded.
Altoid - curiously strong.
