"I'll even mention another long-standing problem that has not been addressed --- and won't be any time soon. That's overpopulation. Humans consume and pollute. If sensible birth control doesn't stem the growth of population, nuclear nutcakes will do it the hard way. It may be more imminent than we can (or allow ourselves) to imagine."
I've mentioned several times that the claims of overpopulations is a myth. Even the U.S. only maintains it's growth mainly from the influx of immigrants (legal and otherwise)

Every country is Europe is experiencing significant population shrinkage as their birth rates are not high enough to even maintain the status quo, much less increase.

China's one baby policy and the ability to predict the sex of the child in the womb mean that the abortion of female children in favvor of males will begin to have an impact soon and China will begin face a serious shortage of potential mothers as early as 2015.

While the UN projects outrageous growth (they need to to keep their jobs), most other groups studying the problem are indicating that within a century or so the world's population will begin to decline.

So overpopulation is not going to impact anyone alive today anyway.

I believe I've posted on this before. The current world population is about 6,520,000,000 people. The worlds land surface is about 57,393,000 sq. mi., or about 36,700,000,000 acres. Assuming 10% of the land is arable (I believe the real number is closer to 18%), then we have 3,670,000,000 acres available for the world population, or a density of about 1.78 persons per arable acre. Hardly over crowded, especially when you consider we can live on non-arable acrage (most of the population does).

Another way to look at it, if we took the world's population and moved them all to Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, with at total land area of 412,416 sq. mi., the population density at 15,809 persons/sq. mi. would be a little over half the density of Tokyo.

As I recall, the population explosion alarmists were predicting widespread famine and water shortages by the end of the last century. Yet, while there are famines and water shortages in parts of the world, the principle culprit is the inability to distribute food to the starving people. People are starving while food rots in warehouses because political differences, wars, and other factors prevent us from delivering food to them.

Even the problem of water shortages can be addressed. The ability to desalinate sea-water on a large scale has existed for nearly a century, but there has been thus far no economic justification for implementing it. If water supplies begin to dwindle, the economics will turn and we will be begin to tap that 70% of the Earth's surface that is covered with water.

Again, where the pessimists see problems, optimists see opportunity. The optimists generally prevail, but the pessimists sell more books.

Haggis, or shall I label you "Neeps&Tatties@wk "The article doesn't say why they are childless. Is it because they can't afford them? Maybe they would be willing to adopt the unwanted Chinese girls....

Shap, why are you so pessimistic about pessimists? You non-comformists are all alike.

Serenity,

I didn't think I sounded pessimistic about pessimists, I said they generally lose out to the optimists, which is a good thing, unless your a pessimist, in which you case you expected to lose, anyway, so no harm is done. I think.

I have to go, I've got to pick up my non-conformist uniform at the cleaners.

Hmmm....maybe....if my immigration suggestions never materialize...it could be made into a video game! Someone's gonna make money on this idea...Rio Grande Bounty Hunting....Border Patrol...Get 'em!....El Coyote.....

We can have some players smuggling them in and others tracking them down. We can have a variety of types trying to sneak in, including drug lords and terrorists. There could be natural perils too! Scorpions, snakes, Gila Monsters, Flash Floods.

That is a wonderful idea, in fact some American families adopt Chinese orphans. Now, if our legislators would get smart and make adoption in the U.S. less complicated and expensive, we might have a real solution to the high rate of abortions here - but that's a different thread entirely...

Aaack! I'm hijacking my own thread! Someone stop me!

Nope, not lurking. As far as this topic is concerned, I've said m' piece*(did someone in the back row just faint?). TO me, the rest of the discussion is mainly narrow perspectives producing ineffective solutions.

Hey Shap, how's that for pessimism?

* That is, unless we get into more Bush-bashing, then I'm back in!

Serenity: Filipinos used to do that, quite a lot. Join the Navy, see the world, earn US citizenship, settle the family in San Diego, San Jose, or Long Beach.

Jeff: we have a real solution to the high rate of abortions. It's called contraception. If you don't want it, don't start it. (Apparently, that's what the Russians are doing.) Adoption from China isn't easy, or cheap, and there seem to be parents willing to deal with it. (Oddly, the orphans are not so much known orphans as foundlings, for whom there are no known parents. They all seem to be girls.) So I don't think improving legislation here would help.

Have no fear. Classical music lovers would be exempt in any plan of mine. First we neuter Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz --- and their offspring --- (Rice is exempt), all congress people who voted for Bush to have the sole ability to declare war, and work down to all violent criminals.

And then, we have the heroic volunteers for neutering. There should be a special medal, maybe a "purple tube".

Hi Haggis. Overpopulation is not a future problem. It's a now, and the past 50 or so years problem. The increase in population over the last 50 years (whether by immigration or copulation population) has caused noticeable climatic change (noticed by most scientists), rape of the environment, gluttony for, and unholy alliances over oil, and genocidal wars. This is no myth.

What? We can't neuter Rice, too?! She needs neutering as badly as the rest of 'em.

Shouldn't the be, "work down to all the other violent criminals"?
