Hi Marye,

I don't think anyone here said the man doesn't pollute, just not to confuse pollution with carbon dioxide levels. When it is a component of the naturally occurring systems, variations in that system can be man-made or natural. So far the proof eludes science.

CO2 is not a atmospheric component measured for a smog alert.

Here's a good question for people who like to do their homework, what is the #1 source of freshly minted carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Completely overwhelming all other sources. Warning, this is a tricky question.

Somewhere I picked up the impression that it's the annual growth cycle, ie composting the autumn leaves and vegetation from the growing season, mostly by little bacteria and fungi. Probably I got that from reading Asimov in the late 50's. As i recall human activity amounts to only a few percent of that amount. :o

That's my guess.

My guess is the by-product of burning gas and oil.

Forests suck up carbon dioxide and convert it back to oxygen, if I remember correctly. Clearing forests, a human project, has allowed much of the CO2 to escape.

I've heard that the vast majority of scientists consider global warming real, and something we need to try to to counter. Can they all be Democrats?

My point, which I think I've already expressed sufficiently on another thread, is that debt isn't a problem as long as we have the assets to cover it.

Right now, I owe considerably more money than I owed ten years ago. yet my financial situation is much better now than it was ten years ago. My debt/asset ratio has improved, even though the debt is probably four times what it was then (new house, new (to us) automobiles, business), but assets are more than sufficient to cover that debt. Our government works the same way.

And if you used your assets (house, car) to cover your debts, you wouldn't own a house and car. If the government were to sell off the auto and homebuilding industries to cover its debts, we'd be the poorer for it.

And one thing I forgot to add about the annual deficit. I believe the cost of the "War on Terrorism" is excluded from the budget, so the budget deficit won't be so glaring. Creative accounting hurt Enron. It's hurting us, too.

Debt bothers me a lot. I don't have any. What little I have in the bank is free and clear. Yet, the "economy", as it affects me, is terrible, since the bank account is dwindling just trying to keep the head above water. Our "fixed income" fails by far to keep up with inflation (of gas, oil, medications).

Apparently, debt doesn't bother you at all. Your income must be more than your outgo. Ours once was, while I was in the working world. Debt may bother you some day.

Shos,

Debt bothers me, I don't like being in debt. But I like to live, have a nice house, have a nice car, etc., so I owe, I owe, and off to work I go.

I don't intend to remain in debt, but who does? The key factor to me is that I do not get in over my head. As long as I have marketable assets greater than my debt, I can get out of it. I can sell my house and live in a smaller one. I can sell my truck and drive an older one. I can sell my business and work for someone else.

BigJon,

I think the largest source of CO2 is the oceans, but I could be wrong.

Here is a fairly good article on the CO2 topic

I'm new here so be kind to me. LOL!

Well, at a guess I'd say 'cow deposits' ..... no, I think that's methane. Maybe plankton ..? Yep, I think it's plankton.

Much Love, Light and Laughter to you All.

Freshly minted meaning as a result of a chemical reaction, not being released from sequestration.

Bigjon, you're being pedantic. I hope you are having fun with it.
Defenestration of carbon dioxide isnt nearly as fun as defenestration and release from sequestration of a large watermelon.

Gas production - methane isnt the only green house culprit.
Animals and swamps/bogs are indeed rich sources of methane.
Probably so are rotting defenestrated watermelons.

Yep, always.

BTW, you are hilarious. If I blow out the window, have I defenestrated CO2?

Depends. Are you a methane-emitter? Do you have constituitive methane expression? Or induceable methane expression? Its not for everyone, ya know. Try the match test

Fer shure tho, you'll have one heck of a story!

If I stuck some other portion of my anatomy out the window and blew, then there would be no doubt as to my methane emission status.

How the heck did this thread go south so fast? I went off to attempt clarification of something an engineer wrote as an explanatory (!) note, and came back to find that innocent CO2 had turned into watermelons out the window and bean-powered jet propulsion. Yikes!

BTW, I now have hiccups. Thanks, all.

CO2 - I'm guessing ye olde gardens, natural and otherwise. Mostly not minted. Second source - heavy breathing.

Dropping a 2-L soda bottle ( full) is definitely one way to defenestrate and desequester (?a word?) CO2. Drinking that bottle could give one hiccups.
