You actually worked from "home"......in Wine Country!.............on a Friday!............COME ON!

To the contrary...I am still work-ING as it is only 2:00P here. Friday is my telecommuting day due to traffic etc. in the SF bay area. Fridays often result in 2 hour commutes from the SF to home. The boss and I agree that it is absurd to subject anyone to that...thus, I get to jump outta bed 1.5 hours later and work comfortably from home. Yeah...it's a nice perq

So you go over the golden gate bridge to go to work? That's pretty cool, though it'd become just another bridge quickly I'd think. :D

Don't you have any kids to ruin your nice work environment there? (I'm really, actually jealous of your commute  )

Yes...it is "just another bridge" and it costs $5.00 to cross it. I still like to walk across on occassion and riding my bike is awesome.

It's a NMCI'd Dull. There's a P4 processor, and the front panel sticker says it was designed for MS Windows XP. So, of course, it's running an eviscerated version of Win2000. With lots of "security" features.

One of the features is that every time a process or program starts up, the control server has to check with a permissions server before it allows the computer to start the process.

It takes three minutes for Explorer to start Java.

It must be the memory then. At one point they thought that 256MB was sufficient to run Windows XP, but that's bare minumum.. What does your task manager say for physical memory?

It says "260088".

It doesn't matter. I'm not allowed to increase it, anyway (or I'd be down at Frye's right now with money in my hand) and I'm guaranteed a new machine every two years. Of course, they lied, and this one is 3 1/2 years old now...

Yep! 256 MB. yah, my computer comes up with 199MB used most times, after all my login stuff finishes. Makes it so even 512 MB gets slow when I really have lots going on. That I run Firefox doesn't help, of course. It gets up to 100 MB without much trouble... But my AV and my IM has gotten bigger lately too, bah!

Some software stakes a claim on the memory at startup, and refuses to relinquish it's claim even if it's not running. If you increase the memory, I think they just increase their claim size.

When I first took my computer out of the box, all the features worked, inlcuding the DVD player. Once I had installed all the software I needed, many features slowed to a crawl, and the DVD player refuses to work at all, citing lack of available memory. I've added more memory, but the DVD player has never worked properly since. I even re-installed the DVD player software, thinking it would stake a new memory claim, but to no avail, it runs in five-second increments, until finally pooping out about fifteen minutes or so into the viewing.

I think AutoCAD is the biggest culprit, but other programs seem to be memory hogs as well.

I miss DOS, it never pretended it could multi-task!

Been busy killing trees. I used to worry about killing the trees, but I've seen the right half of the country. We've got way too many trees, no need to worry.

Trees are important. They suck in CO2 and exhale O2, which we breathe. They also stabilize the soil, hold in all the rain so it doesn't flood the topsoil away with all the rich nutrients.

Yes, I know trees are very important! It was just an excuse for me to use the word "bloody". :o

I'm lucky, in Winnipeg, there are many many trees, large elm trees on either side of street that form an arch above some of the trees. Very pretty!

Sorry, folks, you've geen warped by your twisted surroundings. Proper vegetation is mostly grass and scrub, ornamented by the occasional pepper tree or jacaranda. In other words, hills and weather permitting, you should be able to see for twenty miles or so without any freakishly crowded trees getting in the way.

I've seen Massachusetts. Briefly, I admit. Only normal looking part of the state was the part right next to the salt water.

Of course, I also think nine to fifteen inches of rain a year is normal. Snow is something that decorates the mountains maybe six weeks a year. Sleet? What's that?

I admit the O2 and CO2 points are valid. I know: plant a geranium. Proper sized plant, never gets more than four feet tall, vigorous and green.

(I think I'm gonna need the FRS when they wake up and see this. <snicker, snicker, tee, hee>
