Why Homeland?

Postby BigJon@Work » Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:17 pm

Why was the word homeland selected to describe the securing of our domestic lands? Whenever I hear the word I think of German nationalists or some Soviet era propaganda piece. Why the heck did that word pop to the front instead of domestic or interior or something more military/bureaucratic in nature. Homeland was a word that was never used within my hearing to describe the US before Sept. 11.

I hear ya. the Soviets didn't use homeland much. more of mother Russia.
but Germans did use The German Homeland(s) a lot.

How about "The Fatherland"? (Or is it "The Motherland"?) Actually, "patriot" comes from the greek/latin root for "of the father's land".

I"m sure Freud would have something to say about the Russian fixation on motherhood. :D
