United Flight 23???

Postby Haggis@wk » Thu Sep 13, 2007 5:50 pm

On 09/11/06, I was watching a documentary on the U.S. airspace closing on 9/11. They briefly mentioned a Boeing 767 departing Newark to Los Angeles on United Flight 23 that's Captain decided to stay on the ground.

Apparently a few passengers fled the plane after they arrived back at the gate, leaving their luggage. The luggage, when searched contained al-Qaeda documentation and fake ID's, so the people were never found.

Was that true? This was the first I'd ever heard of it.

FYI: This documentary was on the History Channel Tuesday evening; the title was "Grounded on 9/11"

I also found the below. I checked Snopes.com and was surprised that there was no reference..

Shortly after 9:00 a.m., United Airlines Flight 23 receives a warning message from flight dispatcher Ed Ballinger. Flight 23 is still on a Newark, New Jersey, runway, about to take off for Los Angeles. Apparently in response to Ballinger’s message, the crew tells the passengers there has been a mechanical problem and returns to the departure gate. A number of Middle Eastern men (one account says three, others say six) argue with the flight crew and refuse to get off the plane. Security is called, but they flee before it arrives. [CBS News, 10/14/2001; Chicago Daily Herald, 5/14/2004] Later, authorities check their luggage and find copies of the Koran and al-Qaeda instruction sheets. Ballinger suspects they got away. “When all we have is a photo from a fake ID, the chances of finding [someone] in Afghanistan or Pakistan are rather slim.”[Chicago Daily Herald, 5/14/2004] A NORAD deputy commander later says, “From our perception, we think our reaction on that day was sufficiently quick that we may well have precluded at least one other hijacking. We may not have. We don’t know for sure.” [Globe and Mail, 7/13/2002]

Surely, if this was a hoax, someone would have debunked it by now???

Haggis....was this the BB from which you you got this? The text (written on 4/10/06) is almost identical to your post here. Did you copy it from this BB?

I'm inclined to believe it is a hoax. I Googled it, and found a few references, but nearly all identical and nearly all from blogs, not news sites.

Snopes.com has no entry on it.

It sounds plausible.

This link, which has the appearance of credibility, says the pilot was probably apprised of trouble. But it does not follow up flight 23.

9:08 A.M. Ballinger, the United flight dispatcher, began to send out ACARS messages

had been ordered for commercial aircraft in the New York area.315

The blogosphere could well be referring to these two bags by mistake

25 The tw,o bags that Atta checked in Portland were not loaded aboard Flight I1 before the flight departed.
A witness from American Airlines told the FBI that the bags came over from US Airways to American's
buagg,ae area too late to make it on to the flight. The bag tags were marked designating them to be put

aboard the airline's next flight to Los Angeles. After the attacks the bags were opened and law enforcement
officers found a Koran, tape on flying a jetliner, a large folding knives and a distance measuring ruler. See
FBI report of investigation, interview of witness, Sept 19, 2001
, page 85

I got there googling 'united acars ballinger'. Seems the poor guy's had a breakdown since.
