Would you vote to eliminate the state tax if given the chance? Massachusetts will get a chance in November. :?:

Depends what they are replacing it with. I think state and local taxes should be exclusively income and/or use based.

I got a buck that if it's passed it will never get signed into law. The last time it was proposed the opponents didn't come out against it because they thought the people of MA really like paying their taxes. When the bill gathered 40% of the vote on a measure that had little publicity the tax and spend Dems almost had a heart attack.

This time they'll be out in full hue and cry promising all sorts of dire consequences if it passes.

I do not believe it will pass. Most of the state would be in shock! It's like telling someone they can't rely on their prescriptions anymore, they're going to have to change lifestyle. Say what!?

If the state could not fund their spending on personal income, they'll compensate and raise taxes on business, real estate and vice (gambling, cigarettes, liquor). The house representatives and senators seem to approve every single proposed legislation that makes it through their hands!

Was not surprised to see that New York's tax freedom day is the third latest, after NJ and Connecticut. Grrr! They tax my husband's 414H contributions (which the Fed's don't touch) and add a use tax to Internet purchases (for me that was $40 added to my total tax owed). Ridiculous. At least we're planning to get out of our current town - high property taxes (and lots of scandals, misappropriation, etc by the school board) in the next year or so.

TAX FOUNDATION: Tax Burden of Top 1% Now Exceeds That of Bottom 95%.

“Newly released data from the IRS clearly debunks the conventional Beltway rhetoric that the ‘rich’ are not paying their fair share of taxes. Indeed, the IRS data shows that in 2007—the most recent data available—the top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 40.4 percent of the total income taxes collected by the federal government. This is the highest percentage in modern history. By contrast, the top 1 percent paid 24.8 percent of the income tax burden in 1987, the year following the 1986 tax reform act.”
