I'm not surprised. Chinese interest in a much smaller deal here has caused such great concern that the Overseas Investment Office still hasn't approved the sale after considering it for somewhere around a year.
In this country, we have the example of the Maori to show what happens when you sell your land to foreigners. We non-Maori don't consider ourselves foreigners any more, but we were at the time most of the land was sold. Most of us have at least a smattering of our history, and don't want to re-visit that aspect of it.
