I will forever cherish the memory of my grandmother singing "Nearer My God To Thee" walking out the back door picking us a chicken and wringing its neck! I was 6-7 at the time.
A few days later my grandfather let my older (10-11) cousin chop off a chicken's head. After the head was "removed" the body took off running, spraying blood all over the clothes on the clothesline! My cousin chased after it, whacking at the body with the axe. I don't think we ate that one.
I remember my father was laughing so hard he couldn't get his breath. 50+ years later I can appreciate the spectacle.....
