Basically, you create a new account for your Beethoven mail. Kevin has some instructions on the Beethoven Help Page. Under Beethoven E-mail and the topic Can I use an e-mail program like Outlook Express with my Beethoven E-mail account?.

In addition to Kevin's instructions: Set your e-mail address and reply address to your account. Enter your login and password.

Serenity, it was pretty much a matter of deduction and having had a year of study in the topic. I had studied the use of named ports as part of my "Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer" course, so I recognize one when I see it in the URL. It was the only thing that was different about the site than the sites I can get to, so I made the deduction that the firewall was preventing me from going through the named port.

I don't go to a lot of sites with named ports, so I don't have a lot of extra evidence to back that up, but it's still an explanation that fits the observed phenomena.

Barfle, I'm just teasing.....Hey wait a minute...are you making that jargon up? I believe you but I should bone up on computers......it's the smart thing to do.

Nahh, if I was making it up, it would make more sense. Seriously, there are many things about computers that should be much simpler than they are. I think one of the reasons software is so full of bugs is because it's unnecessarily complicated.

But, it's made Bill Gates the world's richest man, so he's not complaining and he's in charge.

Has the B.com e-mail server died? It went down late yesterday, was up for a few minutes this morning, and now it has gone down again!

Kevin, what we used to do when the reactor on the sub was giving us problems was to get a BIGGER HAMMER! Just a suggestion....

Here's an update, this came from Chris Larsen our IT main man:

Unfortunately our database server crashed last night and I am in the process of grabbing our data from it and installing it on a temporary computer to get our services back up and running. In the mean time some services may be interrupted including the beethoven music log and email. I will bring these back on-line as soon as possible. Email to Beethoven may be a little slow but otherwise the system should be running fine. Thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,
Chris Larsen
IT Manager
Marlin Broadcasting, LLC

As a side note, this problem came from a partner of ours in the Hartford area that helps stream us. They crashed last night and it crashed our systems. Larsen's on it, I just saw him and he says that it should work it's self out shortly. Sorry folks. It stinks for us too, we can't get any requests today!!

*laugh* OT.

You have *NO* idea how hard it was to resist requesting it here, just to make trouble. But I won't.

Would rather hear some more D. Scarlatti if Nicole happens to troll by here and pick up a request. :)

I'll go one further than Dan and say that computers make things more complicated. But, to their redemption, they let us do cool things like listen to a radio station 1500 miles away, fly airplanes that would otherwise spin out of control in a blink, send email, grab cool programs quickly, chat... No, not simpler, but cooler.

Sorry, I like Anna & think she fits in with the whole b.com landscape well, but I don't get that hormonally driven over an image on a webcam. Just like why I like Coke over Pepsi, more into The Real Thing. <sigh> ;)

As for the original topic, thanks for getting e-mail back up folks. However, is there anything we can do about the e-mail timing out? It seems to be at about 15 minutes, although I haven't actually timed it since I'm seeing red every time it happens.

I've been talking with a lot of colleagues from other stations Internet-based companies and we have all experiencing intermittent network issues cause by problems with the Internet lately. It's been very frustrating because, for the most part, there's really not much we can do to fix it. That's one of the things that's been slowing the email system lately.

Also, we had a power failure a couple days ago that caused major problems with one of the servers our email system uses. We have a backup server running now, but it is not as robust as the main one. We should have the main server back online very shortly. I believe this could be the cause of the issues with the spam filter, as well.

Kevin

B.com e-mail seems to be down again. I can't send anything out & nothing comes in. every time I send a message, it vanishes & doesn't even show up in my "sent" box. It's been like this since Friday evening. :(

I got a couple of emails at my office today that I had forwarded Saturday night.

I know you are having problems. This isn't a complaint, just a status report.
