Then there was the MAF that we had xeroxed and mounted in the Cal lab. Problem was described by pilot as:
IFF XVR WILL NOT TRANS IN OFF POSN

and another:
FLIR WILL NOT XMIT
OK, that one I'll at least comment on. A FLIR is a passive infrared system, and is not supposed to transmit. Passive systems often don't.

There was also the equally infamous recurrent gripe (and this is apocryphal, as I did not see the MAF myself) that the radio band setting knob was too hard to turn from detent to detent. The MAF was repeatedly answered NPF. Next time this pilot flew, same gripe.

The gripe was finally alleged to have been signed off by the squadron maintenance officer with the resolution "Install stronger pilot".

I'm going to remember PEBCAK. Although I must admit that I like Ethan's "evil chicken" translation a lot more than the chair/keyboard one.
