Good to hear Barfly.

I found a running transcription of the FEMA radio communications. Its on IRC.

- Server: irc.freenode.net (port 6667)
- Channel: #interdictor-scanner2

If you need directions on how to setup and irc client, let me know.

I really hate to report this, The NG troops are still being shot at. They are trying to set up some generators and the bullits are flying. What a mess.

listening to the scanners, it is a horror show.

Incase you haven't heard there is a large typhoon hitting Japan right now. It is expected to reach my house in another 6 hours. The storm is almost identical to the one that just hit the gulf coast of the United States but not quite as strong. It is so big that it can cover all of the main islands of Japan. They have predicted 2 feet of rain in the next 24 hours. It has already been raining heavily for 24 hours because the storm activated the fall rain front. We live on a hill so we don't have to worry about flooding, but they are warning about mud slides. There have been many earthquakes in the past year and the ground is soft. We had a 4.1 earthquake here last night. We have the house shut up tight and we'll be riding this one out. (hopefully not all the way down the hill!)

Annette,

I've been glued to the TV since the hurricane, and haven't seen a thing of it. It seems CNN has all of their focus in New Orleans, and haven't anything to share for the rest of the world.

Sad. I'll see what I can find online.

Alright, who keeps pissing off god/mother nature/grand controller of nature?

First the gulf coast now japan. Actually, It seems like we're in some sick twisted SimCity game at the moment. The planet was built up and now comes the storms to see how well the cities were built. I always thought that was a pretty stupid computer game. rambling, I'm rambling, la la la la la! time for a snack.

The storm didn't make it to us overnight. It has practically stalled. The eye remains over the water on the west coast of Kyushu. The very tip of Kyushu has been in the storm zone for 24 hours. I believe we had about a foot of rain last night and it continues.
A friend in Alaska asked it we were going to evacuate. "Evacuate to where?" I asked. The storm is big enough to cover practically the whole country, and the population of Japan is 1/2 the population of the entire USA. She suggested another country. :p A car with loudspeakers has been driving around telling where the evacuation sites are. When they say evacuate here they just mean go to the nearest school. Thousands of people have evacuated on Kyushu. There is a lot of flooding going on. They spent the night on gym floors. Tokyo has even been flooded because of the activated rain front. They had 90mm of rain in one hour. Some places in Kyushu had 1,200mm of rain last night. They say it won’t get here for another 9 hours. It will have to go over land, so it should we weekend by the time it does.

Thanks for the update. not one word about it on the US news outlets. Strange.
Glad to hear your doing OK. I hope the mud stays at bay also. Good luck, and if you can keep us posted

Shapely,
The only place I found info provided on the storm that will hit Japan is the Weather Channel and it seems to only be during their "Tropical Update" segment.

The storm has turned and is now over us. We have been in the storm zone for over 24 hours, but the center is quite close now. It's getting windier and the rain has been coming down at about 2" an hour all day. We haven't lost power, yet. They will cut it off if we get high enough gusts. It is getting very muggy and damp in the house. You can't imagine the humidity. The typing paper has absorbed so much water it won't go through the printer.
There have been floods and mud slides all over. Yikes! :o That was a strong gust. I'm going to turn this off and hit the shower before we don't have any hot water.

Annettehala, I think every person in the US has now learned, when they tell you to evacuate, DO IT. There is a point when you will be tempted to use your own judgement, but if that storm is anywhere near you, (as in Katrina's case) you are flirting with death. Hopeing it will miss you is not an option it's stupid.
I will not be suprised to hear that 10's of thousands have died in New Orleans.

Piq, I am not there and have no idea what preparation are in place. Annettehala indicated the officials were telling ppl to go to schools. That may not sound like fun, but the schools most likely have food and water stored for evacuation proposes. Are usually built to withstand severe weather and it makes a common point to rescue people.
In NO we have seen that once refuge removal (sorry for saying it like that) began, everyone got out of the superdome rather quickly. It was faster then doing them one by one in an airlift as is now happening. Even though it did not look sanitary, it was better then wading around in that toxic gumbo now covering the city.
This whole deal is unpleasant but it is an emergency, your very life depends on it.

As for NO, it looks as though the regular pumping stations are being brought back on line, and portable pumps have been installed to start draining the city. even so, the ACE is estimating as long as three months to drain some parts of the city.

I can't imagine the resulting filth, and as Piq asked previously, where in the world will we put all of the refuse?

Has anyone seen a map posted of what areas of NO are flooded, etc.? I've seen the before and after space shots, but it's not clear to me.

I'm amazed people are still refusing to be evacuated.
