GC swallowed by new BB

Postby The Great Carouser » Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:15 am

Once again the board has swallowed an identity. I'm unable to access Great Carouser. Seems I never updated my e-mail address and can't reset the password. So GC's first initial (T) is back in force and I'm third chair again. Humbug!

Ah! I understand now.

I sent Chris the code for the 24 hour bit. I use it all the time.

Did I mention the phpBB Search tool rocks? Go type Firefox in the Keywords box and bigjon* into the Author box. Switch the "Display results as:" to posts. Go ahead, I'll wait. You'll find my comments to be neutral to positive on Firefox. Shoot, I'm using Mozilla in the form of Netscape to type this.

Do you know what a joke is?

OperaTenor wrote:I also find it interesting for someone who has a habit of being pretty abrasive and insulting(without basis, as a rule) to suddenly go all Emily Post.

I log in for home to change my home profile and this gem is staring me in the face. Please find one post where I've been insulting and abrasive to anyone on this board without the name of Avivaldi72. It would take a book to explain my basis.

OT, in all seriousness, I'm worried about you. We used to be able to carry on civilized conversations. You are writing some disturbing turns on your recent posts and it scares the hell out of me.

GC,

The passwords are now case sensitive. Check your typing of your password. That one had me stumped for a while, until I tried retyping my password with the appropriate capitalization.

Sarge and Chris,

Let me just say that, not only do you respond to our suggestions, you respond very quickly. I like the new "View posts in the last 24 hours" option, along with the preview panes it provides.

I'm impressed. (But don't get the big head, I one of those guys that still think digital watches are neat).

Hi All,

BigJon sent me the code and I just implemented it so it is a nice feature. Thanks BigJon! I'll check on your profile GC and more features will trickle in, along with fixes for the PMs. Thanks!

Yup, having the threads show in order of most recent post is a great improvement, as OT noted. Muchas gracias, senores!

originally posted bigjon:
[qb]Piq, I'm not sure why not going to the forum in all weekend is a problem for you and OT. If you click the "view posts since last visit" you'll see everything since the last time you interacted with the forums and set your cookie. That's far better, in my mind, than the old link which just went back an arbitrary amount of time to look for new posts. I often missed a bunch of stuff that was posted on Fri evening and Saturday with that link.[/qb]

You asked if we hadnt seen the heads-up that we needed to save pms. I responded. Accessing it on Monday the 24th, via any feature, was not going to give us time to archive pms elsewhere, which was the question under discussion. However, now we'll form better habits and archive to WORD regularly.

BTW, I used to use the search feature to find all topics with posts within the past 1, 2, 5 days, so three day weekends etc were not a problem for me. We have different expertises. Apparently I was better at navigating the old system than you were.

FWIW "since last visit" is a problem as already described by DavidS because:
I log in, check a couple forums, run out of time, minimize the link, B.com logs me off. When I next log in, it assumes I got to ALL the forums on my last visit, and so those drop off the radar screen.

As I said before, and will almost certainly say again, I really miss Today's Active Topics, I have faith that it can be resurrected, and I have hope that it will be, as Chris and Sarge continue to tweak this new baby into shape.

Why do I keep getting logged out of the BBB?

Is there a limit if no activity goes on you get bumped?

Please advise.

thanks,
TM

When I was on Netscape last night, I got logged out in the middle of browsing. On IE I have not problems. What browser are you using?

bigjon, I'm on IE at work, and I get logged out too.

GC - Im not quite sure, but I think I can look it up for you. If you like, I can loan you a brief history of St Vidicon of Cathode. ;) Selma, too funny!

Selma, do remember, was Leibowitz a saint or was he undergoing the beatification process? Must re-read....

Oh goody! This meets my need (iterated above) for Today's Active Topics. Hooray!

Its not quite as easy to use for me (mostly because it takes up more screen space so its not quite as 'at a glance' as before), but it most certainly does the job and Im quite content to live with it.
Thank you for implementing it.

Story took place during beatification inquiry into Leibowitz' life, I believe POV was the Devil's Advocate guy. Been a long time.

You're welcome. Oops! that's right, Chris and Sarge implemented it. :D (I'll let you in on a little secret, I designed this link, that's why I'm proud of it. Credit where credit is due, I didn't code it, a friend did because I don't know php)

There is an option to show more or less characters for each post, I'm guessing that Chris would want to hear how many are appropriate from the users.

Is everyone aware that you need to click on the "subject" inside the text box if you want to jump to the post? It is not obvious from just looking at it when you have 4 links for each post.

*igJon,

Thanks for the "past 24 hrs.' patch.

However, is there any way to come up with a clone for "Today's Active Topics"? As it is, it gets pretty unwieldy since it includes EVERY post in the last 24 hrs., not just the most recent post on each topic.

I can't think of a way using the existing options. I'll have to ask my buddy, the php guru.

A couple more issues:

No "Quick Reply" in pm's.
Pm's and replies to pm's show up as individual posts on the list - replies don't stack "vertically" like they did before.

stacking the PMs

Postby Selma in Sandy Eggo » Wed Apr 26, 2006 4:56 pm

If you click the quote button instead of the reply, the message you're replying to will nest in your reply. It's an option.

I'm getting used to this. :D
