Judybug,

I was, of course, joking. I also look in my rearview mirror frequently. Being the paranoid that I am, I'm always looking behind me. I never sit with my back to the door, either.

When I was in California back in the '80s, (in the Oakland area) it never ceased to amaze me at the number of people who actually stop in the fast-lane. Here in the mid-west, if you miss your exit, you drive to the next exit and turn around and come back to yours. In California, if you miss your exit, you stop and put on your blinker and wait for the rest of the traffic to stop and let you over. It only takes one idiot trying to get from the left lane to the exit ramp to tie up five lanes of traffic. I've seen it many times.

The other item that seemed to be common out their was the number of people who load their pickups up as high as possible with household items, and then drive down the freeway with nothing tied down. The highways were littered with mattresses, couch cushions, the remains of wooden furniture, and an occasional sofa. Absolutely amazing. To top it off, no-one slowing down or stopping to go around the stuff has the decency to get out and push if off to the side of the road. I guess they figure that what Cal-Trans is for.

Benito, I had a guy try to park his pickup in my trunk once while I was waiting at a red light for the traffic to clear so I could make a right turn, too. Of course, it turned out that he didn't have any insurance, either, so I had to take his RE to small claims court.

Judybug,

I believe it is in the movie "Gumball Rally", in which the Italian driver rips the rear view mirror from the car at the start of the race. He tells his companion: "The first rule of Italian driving: If it's behind me it doesn't matter!"

That is where the rear-view mirror reference came from, BTW. :D

This has happened to us, too. More than once. In CA, being rear-ended is the only accident for which the car hit in the rear has to be held entirely blame-free. So the insurance rates cannot go up due to the individual accident. We just file with our own insurance company (21st Cent), pay our deductible down at the body shop, the insurance takes the idiots to court and recovers their costs, then sends us back our deductible.

The bad driver still pays, it saves us the time and trouble of finding a lawyer and/or going to court. And the insurance company already has a fine staff of lawyers that work for them and are good at this stuff.

It's for the very common problem of non-insured rear enders that I would argue against taking comprehensive/collision off an older car. Going to court isn't my idea of a good time, so maybe it should be considered court insurance...

Being out even a thousand dollars because I was a dummy and hurt my own car, doesn't sit well with me either... What we have here, is risk aversion! :p

Not quite on the road rage topic...

I went for my first post-accident m/c ride this evening. About an 8-mile round trip. A little sweaty-palmed pulling out of the driveway, but after that things kind of fell into place :D . I'm not up for any long rides yet as my left leg is at its flex limit with my foot on the footpeg. But just give me a couple of weeks...

Selma, I had an older car so it didn't have collision coverage, and the accident happened in Orange, CA, so my insurance company (20th Century at the time) wasn't involved.

OT, Bravo!

I applaud you, OT! After my m/c accident some 35 years ago, I decided never to get on one again!

Happy riding, Old Man!!! :D ;)

Yep. First time back in the saddle is always a little shakey nerves-wise. Glad to hear it went well. Did you drive by the kid's house and shake you fist at him? ;)

I have a good one for the "Road Rage" thread. This morning, on my way to work, I stopped in my traffic lane, where the road ends in a "T" intersection and I make a right turn. The vehicle behind me didn't stop in a timely fashion and only missed my bumper by about an inch as it dodged right and slammed on its brakes.

Why did I stop?

There was this crosswalk. With a pedestrian in it.

What almost hit me? A cop car.

Go figure.

So Gabbers...
I heard, a long time ago, that Montana doesn't have an official speed limit. Is this true? Do you drive 140 mph and call the 80mph crowd "Lolligaggers"?

Oh yeah...are you driving this insane german speed to polka music, opera or Ramstein?
