These are just the California shows. Drum corps happens all over the country, and you can find your local events through the Drum Corps International website, at www.dci.org

If you were ever in band, or enjoyed the band at a high school football game when they did the half-time show, or have a kid who does band or who might ever join the band, I encourage you to go and see a show. The performers are between the ages of 14 and 21, and pay for the privilege of being in a drum corps. They start working on the shows in December, and they are astonishingly good. The Blue Devils will blow your socks off, and Vanguard is even better!

Ticket prices are modest, between 15 and 20 dollars. Souveniers and junk food are available. Come out and see a show!

Thanks for the Reminder! I LOVED marching band in High School (class of '70) and for two years at the University of Colorado. I've always had to be content watching DCI on TV once a year, but now there is even a DCI event in Sioux Falls coming up in a couple of weeks. I can't wait!

Huh! I too went to the University of Colorado! From '88-'92, perhaps I saw you on the football field! I certainly enjoyed my share of football there. Some great games including the first CU win against Nebraska to get to the Orange Bowl for YEARS. I think even the band stormed the field after that game! Football in the snow, YEHAW! (Oh, yes, yes, this was a different year and game, but it may have been Nebraska again...)

I checked your show, Jeff, you guys in Souix Falls are being gypped. Only 4 Div I corps - maybe they didn't list Div II and III corps and the show will be bigger than the published lineup.

Come to our show tomorrow, I'll comp you a ticket. (How many frequent flyer miles do you have?)

Or maybe you could make Drums Along the Rockies, and bunk in Ben's attic.

Sorry I'm missing out, Selma. I'll be rehearsing for hours out in Pine Valley.

Cerritos show was last night. Esperanza won in Div II, and out-pointed 3 of the 5 Div I corps there. OK, they use a rougher set of judging criteria for Div I, but it still looks good on paper.

Gonna see the show tonight!

Hi Selma, is the show tonight, not during the day? What time? If it's after 6:30, I think I could make it, depending on where it is.

I even have a spare b.com hat if you don't have one already.

I don't have a hat. Stepoff is at 6:30. Venue is Westview High School, in Penasquitos - it's the new high school. Take Ted Williams westbound until it dead ends (it goes further now, it's past black mountain road) and turn north - the highschool is there. I posted the address above, or you can get the map and directions from http://esperanzaarts.org ; use the link to the "get directions" pdf

I'll leave a ticket at Will Call; we're up in the family section, probably just under the judges box.

I got it. I'll be in that neck of the woods at that time, so I'll be there. Look for the motorcyclist wearing the b.com hat. Is there a specific place you'll be?

It's "Reserved" seating, or at least that's the plan. The seat should have some kind of numbering system printed on it - don't know exactly where I'll be but the corps got tickets in a block, so wherever the block is, there we will be.

"Selma" or "Gil" or "Deb's Mom" or "Deb's Dad" should be enough to find us.

San Diego show review: It was incredible! I thought it was an amazing display of sophistication, precision, coordination and musicianship. If you haven't seen one of these show, I think it's at least worth investigating.

My knee told me I had to leave before the last two groups (who were the highest ranked) went on, so Selma will have to give her impartial expert evaluation as to who was the best. However, setting aside my bias toward Esperanza, I liked the Mandarins a lot.

OT had to say that, he was sitting in the Esperanza family section.

The last two groups, Vanguard and Blue Devils, performed up to their usual world class standard. Nobody actually managed to run over one of the field judges, but Vanguard made one scamper for his life.

Esperanza won their Division, pleasing the home town crowd, and the show moved on to Riverside today.

Gotta go now, Harry Potter book arrived yesterday and I'm a little less than halfway through the thing. I didn't dare open it before the show, I might have forgotten to go.

Oh, Ben o'Den: your Blue Knights have a really nice show this year.

Hi Benito. I was at CU from 1970-73, and in the band in '70 and '71, so I guess we missed each other by a few years. Those were great days as well - even if we didn't get to go to the Orange Bowl.

Selma - Thanks for the offer. I have enough miles, but not enough time. Yeah, there don't seem to be many Corps coming (is Corps both singular and plural? Corpses doesn't seem right ;) ). This is just the second year, though, and maybe they look for events with more prestige, or maybe they just haven't heard about it yet. We have a very enthusiastic group of people promoting it here, though, so hopefully it will be an annual event and get bigger with time.

Jeff

It's a weirdie. Corps (pronounced core)is the singular, and the plural is corps (pronounced cores).

If you guys have four Div I corps on the published lineup, it's a pretty good bet that some Div II and Div III corps will show up, too. And there may be some exhibition groups, too.

San Diego had ten groups, total, and the show ran from 6:30 to 10:00. OT seemed to enjoy even the little Div III corps that came (also based in SD, so it was an easy show for them to make) and was truly impressed by the time the Div I corps took the field. It is a whole different kind of music, but he sounded real happy when one of the corps played a bit of Polovotsian (sp?) Dances.

I marched in a Div 3 corps a couple of years ago.
I was offered a spot in BK this year, but I just couldn't do it. How are they looking this year, Selma, do you think they'll make it to the top 12?
