Hi DB, do you have a TV programme in NZ the same as we've got. It's called pop idol, in this series there's a local lad in the 12. It's 9.30pm here in the UK the results will be coming up in the next hour. The viewers phone in to pick who they think they would like to go through to next week. The 2 singers with the lowest votes are dropped, this goes on till there's only 2 left then the winner is picked. The panel of judges start off with 2,000 wannabe's and they get down to the last 24. When the last 24 are chosen then its televised as, pop idol 2003. If you’d like to have a look at the site just click onthelink below.

Hi lliam.

We've had American Idol and Australian Idol, but I don't think we've had U.K. Idol yet. No doubt it will come.

We had a slightly different program a while ago, but I forget what it was called. It involved wannabes being screened, and the winners forming a girl group like the Spice Girls. Ours was "True Bliss".

They made one album then faded from the scene. A couple of them still have careers in TV, but only one is still a singer. She is Carly Binding, but I don't think she's made it overseas yet, or if she ever will.

In your show, I'd vote for Susanne. ;)

Hi lliam.

Try this: TVNZ
(This one is my employer).

and this: TV3
(This one is the opposition!)

Who actually won the contest? Did we pick right?

I don't own a single recording of hers, but I respect her as an artist and if this is "what the kids are listening to nowadays" in terms of radio-friendly pop, well, they could do much worse.

Sorry to give you the bad news DB, Susanne was voted out of pop idol last night, 4 to go. Our local lad, Mark Rhodes, is still in there with a chance. The bookies are betting on Sam, the 17 yr old from Barnsley to win it.

Or, Gordon Bennett.

Hi again DB, there's a lot too go for on these competitions if you're young. The winner last year was a millionaire in just a few months.

The BBC equivalent this year, received a £1,000,000. house to start her new life can't be bad.

A billion pound house? That seems a bit extravagant!

What sort of house could you buy for a billion pounds, lliam? Would you get Blenheim Palace? Stirling Castle?

From what I read about house prices world-wide, you might be lucky to get a bed-sit in Mayfair.

The blue-collar dormitory suburb where I grew up now has houses that sell for NZD 1 million. Why? Because it's got a beach.

Prices are ridiculous here DB, a £50,000 traditional style house has gone up to £90,000+
I could have got a new 4 bed house with garage etc for £95,000 last year.

=================================================
The same houses in London are maybe double the prices I posted. I haven't been to Paris for 30yrs but it was more expensive than London, then.

I don't know if there is an off season for London, it seems to be a big tourist attraction all the year round. Even so I think you'll have a great time whatever time of the year you visit the capitol. ;)

Those prices look cheap lliam. I have to remember to multiply by 3.

Normally when comparing UK & NZ prices, for $ read Pound, but you won't get anything here for those figures you quoted. However if you multiply by the exchange rate, you get to the same ball park.

One of my colleagues has recently moved here from the UK. He's laughing all the way to the bank.

Well it's mostly the southern part of the UK that's expensive. The farther north of London the cheaper. The cost of living is very expensive in London compared to where I live in the Midlands. When my firm moved me to Camden for 2 yrs in the 60's I was paid, 'London allowance' simply because of the high cost of living.
