There was something passed on e-mail Saturday (when we got it) to the effect that Fred Rogers was a WWII Navy Seal war hero, and that his sweaters covered tattoos.
In the same mail was a story about Lee Marvin telling Johnny Carson, on his show, that the bravest soldier he ever saw was a sergeant at Iwo Jima. That sergeant was Bob Keeshan.

These bits of info stretch credibility, it seems to me. Has anyone heard of Mr Rogers or Captain Kangaroo as war heroes before?

Shos: the google bios of Mr. (Fred) Rogers that I could find didn't mention any military service at all. Somehow, "Seal" doesn't fit with the rest of the man's character. I somehow doubt that the e-mail author did much research.

I've heard both of those tales as well, but I haven't had any verification of either one.

But if it makes you happier, Gray Davis was a combat Marine in 'Nam. I wonder if he was any more respected there...

I've heard the Bob Keeshan story before. I seem to recall it was froma source I regarded as reliable.

The only thing I knew for sure about Fred Rogers' background was he was an ordained minister. A group of us brought him up in conversation last night, and it was alleged he behaved in real life just as he did on his show - as gentle as could be.

Here's a link to Bob Keeshan's bio. He was a Marine, but late in the war. It doesn't say whether he saw combat or not, unless I overlooked something.

According to this site:

http://www.who2.com/fredrogers.html

The Mister Rogers story is bunk. He didn't serve in the military.

There's no mention of military service in his obituary, either.

Thanks, Shapley, for the input. I looked over the Keeshan bio. It said Marine Reserve 1945-46. I just checked "Iwo Jima". The battle was in Feb, 1945. This doesn't eliminate Keeshan from the battle, but it lowers the likelihood.
