"Pop-up" advertising

Postby OperaTenor » Mon May 24, 2004 9:18 am

My impression is we find them annoying. There are now even pop-ups for software to block pop-ups(which I find ironic as well as annoying). The question is, have any of us ever paid attention to any pop-up ads, much less, has any of us ever bought anything as a result of them?

As a sidebar, pop-up distribution seems to have taken a new tack: They arrive in bursts now periodically. I'll get seven in rapid succession, then won't see any for a couple of hours, then get another ten or so, etc. Is this the new norm?

Ah, a pop-up thread. Yes, pop-ups are annoying, but now that they're mostly popunders that I can dismiss from the lower bar, not too bad.

I have somehow (just this weekend) gotten effective popup blocking on Explorer settings. Rather cool, that. I don't know how it happened, and I wish I could change the ugly noise that Explorer makes when it blocks a popup. The worst part of having the "block" setting on is that it considers the B-com player to be a popup and blocks it. I can't figure out how to selectively unblock the player, or turn off the blocking altogether. And I can't get b-com at home unless I use aol rather than the straight browser, which I generally prefer.

To return to the point of OTs thread, I have never bought anything advertised in a popup ad. I never plan to. It would be like sending a ThankYou card to every real estate agent who ever left a fridge magnet calendar on my doorstep. Unthinkable, and certain to produce more of the things.

I have ended up buying things from the rather civilized dropdown announcements on the Amazon website, or from sidebar ads. I'm more inclined to consider them legitimate advertising.

Google has a toolbar with a "programable" popup blocker. GC knows more about it than I do.

I'm downloaded the Google popup blocker this morning. So far, it does a great job of blocking the b.com Adsertion player(even when I disable the durn thing), but hasn't block a single popup ad. I am very close to dumping it.

Research continues: I can get the b.com stream if I go under "Options" on the google toolbar, uncheck the blocker, then load the stream, then go back in and re-check the blocker.

Research ended, Google popup blocker uninstalled, a dismal failure. It would only block the one thing I didn't want it to: b.com.

Hi OT, get the free pop up blocker from the site below, it's free.

When you need to loose something through you just have to hold the ctr button down till your pop up appears. No uncheck and recheck, it's a nice little free tool. ;) ;)

That 'Ctrl + click' also works with the free google toolbar

I'm going to try the Ctrl-Click on b.com in Explorer at home tonight. Maybe it's a standard "permit" sequence. <hopeful smilie>

google toolbar works for me. but there is a pop up that opens everytime I open Beethoven.com homepage. it's the only one that opens and my blocked popups count is at 1885 now. ctrl-click helps to open the player window.
